I was on my way to town, and came across a big tree that the last wind storm had blown over. I stopped and got some leaves from it because I couldn't identify what kind of a tree it was. If it's a good tree for firewood, I'm going to track down the property owner and see if I can get permission to cut on it.

Does anybody have an idea what it could be? I'm in southwest Arkansas...if that helps.

Looks like may be Juglans nigra L. or black walnut is good
firewood but more valuable for veneer and Missouri is the place to sell a
load but one tree not worth the trip. Butternut is second choice!
all good firewood I have not seen tree of heaven in your location even though I am sure there's a few but usually more leaflets than the one in your pic.

Thanks for the replies thus far.

A picture of the tree's bark might help...I'll try to remember to get a picture tommorrow.

I would go with pecan or some type of hickory possibly a water or pignut. Black walnut doesn't normally have a leaflet at the tip and has more leaflets. A pic of the bark and stem and better yet the fruit would help narrow it down. Either way pecan and hickory are great firewood.

Hickory pecan terminal leaflet large butternut walnut terminal leaflet
small or missing but all in the walnut family! I know usually more leaflets but terminal leaflet was what I based my guess on sometimes number of leaflets vary but genetics stay same.
No matter all the walnut family is good wood so burn with
confidence.

I forgot to get a picture of the tree, and I forgot to check back to this thread for more replies. I believe the Pecan votes have won...the leaves are similar to other known Pecan trees in the area. Thanks again for the replies.

rub your meat

Since its grillin season...I'll go ahead and say it. Pecan makes for fine barbecue. Don't forget to rub your meat before you grill it!

My 1st thought would have been Alianthus also. Cuz my guesses are right up there with the Plumbers. But I will go with the majority this time and say....
Pecan. And no doubt, this is one of the most favored of woods for smoking meats. You'll love it.
