I rented one of those Dolmars. (They are marked with the Makita brand name right?) I needed an extra saw on a big job, and it may run as good as a Stihl, but I couldnt get it to start at all, it kept flooding.

Not necessarily, Rich.  If you've got other Stihls which take the same bars/chain-lengths as the 460 and you need a new saw of that size, even at that price the Dolmar could be more expensive in the long run.  Now if you'd said it against the 385 I'd be agreeing!

Which saw

Don't want to ruffle any feathers but if you want the truth i just decided to go all one brand . also my 61 is not spring mounts its all rubber mounts . woulden't throw a 066 or 090 in the ditch for sure i use smaller saws as most of my work can be done with a 24 " or smaller bar . I just find stihls pricey around here but also im using more homeowner type saws id love a minty 044.

You get what you pay for, Stihl is my prefered brand, Husky is good in its own right. Its kinda like the old Ford vs Chevy argument, But you cant compare a Ford to a mazda or isuzu.

For what ever it is worth, I am a Husky fan. I have (knock on wood) not had a lick of trouble out of any of them over the last 10 years...

I thought the Mazdas were made by Ford, or vice versa (the compact pickup I mean).

I bought a 44 and loaned it to a friend.
He dumps it out a tree @ 40 feet. tried to repair it without me know it.
What a idiot.
I lost a good friend of a ????y saw.
cheers!

I just purchased a 361, excellent med. saw. I go with Stihl. Husky parts and dealers are scarce around here.

Having a hard time deciding between Husky and Stihl climbing saw. Weight and size. Stihl seems not as wide. Any hints?

Jack

for pruning i like my echo. light and small. not so much power. for removals the ms200 is a bit better. the husky top saw(335?) that saw is no good. again though the husky 372 is a great tool.

We are splitting hairs here! This comparison is one saw to another!

Well, yes and no.  Part of the cost of a saw (if you're going to use it) is found in the cutting attachments.  If you've got a stable stable, you'll be getting by much cheaper than if every saw takes a different bar/mount/cutter-count(/rim).  To me that's not splitting hairs, it's looking ahead while viewing the immediate price tag on a powerhead.

Hi Glen,

I only have one 357, which was modified by Dennis Greffard, so a fair comparison it would not be, my 357 is very strong. I do however have an 036 to compare to the new 361 and was thinking of that comparison but since I rarely use the 036, I thought that maybe you would be a better person to evaluate the 361 vs the 036 that you have.

I`ve only put two tanks of gas through the 361 so far and it hasn`t bowled me over, but then I was going to eBay my 357 until it had about 5 gallons or more through it and it started to loosen up. I want to put a few more tanks through this one before I send it out.

What I can tell you is that it is very smooth in hand, both in the cut and out, and it revs quickly and smoothly. I also like the flocked, tooless air filter design of the 361 better. So far it seems to have promise. I do have to admit that I like the balance and handle position/spacing of Husky better, but that is very subjective, and the manual decompression feature of the Stihl is superior to that auto bastardization that Husky put on some of the 357s.

More thoughts to come....

Russ

You guys who are discounting the Dolmar 7900 are doing yourselves an injustice!

My only reservation about the 7900 is the lack of dealer support that some people seem to need, other than that, it`s the current class leader in the 80cc - 85cc range in my opinion.

The low price is just a bonus, but expect that to change once Dolmar gets widespread recognition in the pro market. Oh yeah, Dolmar doesn`t spend a fortune on marketing the way Stihl and Husky do either. Less manufacturing/marketing overhead has to be passed down to the consumer.

BTW, for those of you who don`t know me and the saws I have, I also currently have an ms460 and Husky 385xp, I know what`s available in this category and feel that the 7900 is the best overall package.

I use all Sthil, but have no negitive vibes to Husky. First off you can not compare any top handle saw to the 200t. that being said if I use Stihl in the air it is good enough for the ground.
I just purchased the new 361 you mentioned. Great saw, with alot of b___s. They say it is a mid range saw but it has better features than the 440. Alo it has a clear gas tank that are indictive of a pro saw.??

Sthil

PS... Rocky--HELLO, HOW ARE YOU TODAY???

We run all Husky chainsaws except for are climbing saws. We have two Husky 335s that have about 3 hours on them each. They are pieces of crap, they now sit in the shop, we run MS200 stihls great saw. We also have a 020t that has been run daily for 5 years with no problems.

I'll be glad to help you out.  Let me know when you need my address.

BTW, I ad-libbed the part about you making a comparison between it and specifically the 357, but since I knew you had one (forgot it was modded), figured the comparison was inevitable; they are the comparable gear.

I bought the 361 a couple of days ago. So far, I'm super impressed, It the past two days its been used quite a bit, and it's performed magnificintly. This w/ out a doubt is the medium saw to have in the tree.

As soon as i hear back on a couple of bids i have out i'll be ordering the 7900. I still need to check on the shipping costs over there at Baileys, and to decide upon a bar length. Will it run a 36''? If so do you think it would perform well enough w/ this large of a bar?
