If you were to buy a new saw of approx. 4.5 hp to 5.5 hp what would you be buying.

NOTE: weight is a consideration also would like to keep as light as possible.

Dolmars are out presently as they are not avilable here yet or I haven't located any anyways.

Husqvarna 262XP (4.8Hp) Can you still find a new one?

Efco/Emak 962, Deere CS-62 (4.7Hp)

These are both 12.5 lb powerheads (thereabouts)

Otherwise MS440, or 372XP (but only since Dolmar is not in the running!)

The Echo CS-670 is in hunt too, as well as maybe the Husqvarna 365, but those are a little heavy for their power.

How about a modified MS361 or 357XP? They could be pushed well into that range if weight is a big factor.

Hey lobo,
Any miketia dealer that sells drills, cut offsaws etc... will bring in dolmar, my "home hardware" store will they just have to contact the sles rep. for that area and no problem. parts are the same. but they are the blue ones if you dont mind the colour.

Would not mind a PS7300 however.

Hi lawmart, yes and I have no problem with the Makita brand, products, quality or color. However the saw would have to be shipped to Ontario presently for servicing. For now locally they only repair electric and battery power tools. Hopefully it is coming.

Yes, if you move to Russia or Israel.

I resently tried to persuade Husky/Norway into getting me one. They would (or maybe could) not. I bought the MS361. :)

I like it a lot so far, but this winter's off-season came early, so I haven't even run it in yet.
Believe it or not, but saws in the 60cc class is considered as big saws in this area - so I will be hard pressed to find something in the same class to compare it to side by side. My brother has a 262xpg, but he is over 1000 miles away!

So far I haven't really found anything that I dislike on the 361, but I have to admit that I like some of the ergonomics and appearance/feel of the plastic parts better on my Husky 353.
The inboard cluch and better chain tensioner on the Stihl more than makes up for it though.

May be that is the reason, that they did not yet sell the old stuff out there.

I don't know if those saws are old stock, or new.
If they are new, they just might be produced in Russia, as I think Husky has a factory there.
Anyway, stated power output is down from 4.8 hp/3.5 kw to 4.7/3.4.
DLG-test in 1997 showed 4.9/3.6.

If you had to pick one as a paramount factor, would it be hp or weight? If weight is your primary concern, go with a 361 and warm it up. If hp is your primary concern, I'd say MS440, and use it out of the box. I've got a 361, and then jump to a 460. That 460 is alot of saw, and let's just say I've got my eye open for a good 044/440 deal to come along. Not that I'd sell my 460, but that 440 would be a nice fit between my 361 and 460, and I think it's a darn fine example of a larger all around saw.

Take care all,
Jeff

Presently because of back problems WEIGHT.

However a mixture of both would be real nice.

Are you running the new 361 and if you are how is the air filtration on it ?

If weight is the prime issue, there really is only one choice; Stihl MS361. :blob2: According to independent tests (DLG) the weight of some of the saws in question, without bar/chain but with cluch cover etc, is as follows:
357xp, 5.9 kg
361, 5.6 kg :)
365, 6.1 kg
6400, 6.4 kg
440, 6.2 kg
372xp, 6.4 kg
7300, 6.4 kg
7900, 6.4 kg :)
460 6.5 kg

I haven't used my 361 enough to have much of an opinion on the air filtration, so far it has been just fine, though. From what I have read, the general consensus seem to bee that is is better than on any other stihl, but still not as good as on Husky and Jred saws.

There's still more than one choice. Efco 962 is a good saw. So is the 357XP. But the only saw that is going to get you at least 4.5 Hp is the EFCO, and it is as light or lighter than the MS361.
