Just want to thank everyone for all of the amazing wisdom shared on here. I've been lurking for awhile, searching the archives everytime a used saw pops up on the market. I dodged many a bullet by reading on here. Ended up buying a new Stihl MS261c on sale today, after much deliberation around the used machines. Brought it home and chopped up a bunch of willow that's been needing a clean up, and WOW am I impressed!. What an awesome saw! Thanks again gang. Heading out to collect some firewood soon, like a kid in a candy store!

Fine choice....be particular about the fuel and it will always be sweet...

Ethanol? I'll have to keep an eye on that. Most fuels up here in oil country have ethanol I believe.
Yeah you can get canned ethanol free or race gas but both are expensive. If you use it enough its not a big deal. You can buy expired avgas (villneuve airport used to sell avgas to anyone, not sure if they do anymore) and Rad Torque raceway sells race fuel which is also ethanol free.

Awesome, thanks for the tips!

Congrats on the 261 !! Dang nice saws.

If you’re willing to do some mad scientist stuff you can dump your gas in a container with some water and watch the ethanol fall out of solution. Bingo bango no more ethanol.

Or just run it dry when you’re done and you’ll be fine. I’ve been running 91 octane with 10-15% ethanol in my saws for years and nothing has come flying apart yet. I have a MS250 that had bucked up 12-15 cord a year since new 20yrs ago and still runs good and strong. Biggest issue with the ethanol in the fuel is it gets goofy after sitting for too long so run the saw dry before putting it away and you’ll be fine.

I ran across something about that water in the gas truck, not sure if I'm ready for that level of commitment yet! Haha.

So you run your machine right out of has every time you use it? And buy gas fresh often?

I should have said when I plan to leave them sit for a while I run them dry. The three I use most I leave with whatever amount of fuel is in them when I’m done cutting. The rest of the flock gets run dry.

I have a 500gal gas barrel on the farm and it gets filled with around 300gal of gas a month so I buy fresh gas often but it gets mixed in all the time I guess.
