I am currently running a 044 with a 28' bar, I am looking at buying a new one and am debating on going with either a 24 or a 32. Was wondering what some of you more experienced guys would recommend. I buck up about 3-5 cords of firewood per week, all sorts of wood (here in the northwest). I would say that about 30% of the wood I buck I have to go to the other side, but for the most part the 28 is more than adequate, thats why I was thinking of maybe a 24, will I notice any different with a 24 compared to my 28. Thanks in advance.

32" can be used on an 044. I do... not a lot, but I do run a 32" when I need it. Mine has a 28" bar on it, and likes it. A 24" bar will be fine as well. Might even get a bit more chain speed... but not that big a deal.

Leave the 28"er on the 044, and go buy a 361 for the 24"er...

If you really need to run a 32" bar all the time... then you are gonna want to look at gettin' an 046 or maybe even an 064/066.

I got a chance to play with a 046 yesterday and it is nice and all but a tad(actually alot when you been running one all day) bit heavier than the 044. The guys that drop off the wood to my lot say there favorite saw is the 044, but they run nothing larger than a 28 on it also.

Sounds like you aren't much in need of the longer bar in which case the 24 will get lots of use, and be a bit lighter maybe with less cutters to file. Sounds like a perfect size for an 044 in hardwoods.

A 20" would be better, right Gary? :blob2: :blob2: :blob2: :yoyo: :yoyo:

Now Niko's picking on you Gary!!! Welcome to the club! :ices_rofl:

FDB, it sounds like you're just wanting to buy a bar just to buy a bar. If you don't have a need for the 32", don't waste your time or money. Like Gary said, if you need to run it, the 044 can, but if you don't need it, it'll only get in your way.

Hey!

When the bar is in the cut, the balance does not count, but before it get there, it does.......:blob2: :blob2: :yoyo: :yoyo:

Btw, I don't think I will get any +rep from Gary and Jeff for a while,,,,,,,,,

The reason I was asking cause I am beginning to think that the bar I am running may be slightly bent, not sure yet (I haven't taken it off).

Fishing season is approaching quickly and I dont like paying for anything this time of the year other than bait, gas, moorage, ice, and beer, and more beer.:biggrinbounce2:

keep the 28" surprising how gangley the 32" can be. My044 has worn a 28 since its arrival back in 91. I might go down to 24" now that I have the DP'd 066 with a 32" and a 42".

Interestingly I was considering the same thing yesterday... but the 25 inch stihl ES bar is only 2 inches less than the 28 (measured from the front of the adjuster slot) and is much broader. I think the 25 actually weights more.. If I have time, I'm going to look at this.. 84 drivers on a 25 verses 91 drivers on the 28 is an indicator..

Isnt the 28'' ES bar a "narrow profile" bar? I think I have some brochures from 10-12 years ago about the 28 and 32 bars being narrow profile...

Interested to see what you find out. I still don't think people in other parts of the world outside the pacific northwest understands the long bars. The 28 incher is a great limbing bar though not much bending. 044 is a great limbing saw world.

Hmmmm, I mostly use 15" bars for limbing - I like to see where the tip is.:greenchainsaw:

15" and 3/8x8 is a great limbing combo on the MS361....:rockn: :rockn: .......
