Joe, the black doesn't look bad at all. Do you plan on painting the recoil black as well, seeing as how the clutch cover is black? If you want to swap, I have a clutch cover(metal) that I painted Poulan green. Think it has a pretty good decal on it too. Let me know and I'll check and send you a picture of it.
Bob

Shoot, spoke to soon. Went to look and realized I used it on my 3700 which is in Vermont. I do have a plastic 4000 cover I can repaint and take off the decal if you want. Not sure how the Poulan lime green paint will hold up on Plastic, however. Sorry.

Thats all that matters!

Heres the problem, i did the same thing once before on a Jred 80. I painted the silver black. Well you'd thought I'd bashed America!! They said the jred gods would curse me. Well that saw ran awesome. Until i posted the pics. Now it doesnt run right, the seal in the tank broke down and got sucked in the carb. But this is a Poulan.

Well mine didn't have a cover so I guess a black one is better than none. As soon as the other parts (Thanks Joe) arrive I will post some pics of the other saw I have.

Scott, where did you get that cover on that saw? That's a 4000 or PP 375 cover and much improved! Are you sure you have the right filter on it?

It don't use a regular 3400-3700 filter.

About a year ago I bought a big box of saws at a yard sale for $1.00. This cover was in the box. I'm using the 3400 filter. It fit well into the air box and the top hat fit the filter.
This Poulan stuff is new to me but it's fun getting these old power houses rebuilt.

Looks good to me Joe! I was going to paint the shroud I had on my 4000 black, but was afraid the paint wouldn't hold up well, I use that saw quite a bit. Then there would be green showing through. So I just bought a black one for a 3.7 craftsman, removed the decal and mounted the hand gaurd. They are formed with black plastic. No need to worry about green paint showing through.:)

Unlike some of the other ones I have painted odd colors..LOL:dizzy:

Scott is that the saw the muffler is going on?

Scott, Thats a good find there. I am always looking for 4000 air cleaner covers. Don't see them very often. They use a taller nylon filter, rather than the shorter flocked filter of the 3400 & 3700.

Looks like the saw is in pretty decent shape though!

Nope the muffler is going on the other 3400 I have. That one is going to get tore down and repainted. It runs good but looks horrible. Gently used I would call it. It came to me not running and no muffler. $.50 fuel line fixed the not running part. So here is my other question... where do you find Poulan green to repaint these saws?

Thats the fly in the ointment, Scott. There isn't any, unless you have some custom mixed, like Mark did for his 245A. There is a rattle can color called SubLime green, a 1970 MoPar color that is suppose to be a close match.
I havn't really looked for any yet, but plan on doing so. I can't paint anything till warm weather arives anyway..

I worded that wrong, what I meant to say was the 3400-3700 filter was not used on that cover and the one that is meant for it is improved.

Gregg,

Yeah I'm waiting for warmer weather to paint but looking to get everything first. I was wondering how close the Mopar green would be. I know a few painters so I might see if they can help me match it up.

I can tell you the Valspar acrylic enamal that I used is darn near nuts on.

I was very happy with it. Of course its kinda a pain to have to mix it up in a gun to shoot it, but its worth it to me. A half pint was only $18 and if you know some painters they might hook you up with a little hardner and reducer so you don't have to buy like 100 times more then you need.

My "new" 3400''

After reading about Marks 245a, I thought it would be cool to do that to one of my saws. It wasnt exactly the same, no NOS parts but some old parts painted and the rest torn down and cleaned. So here it is. 1979/80 3400, low hours, 150 psi comp. In great shape. Also save from SCRAP! New NOS banana bar, walbro rebuild kit, new tygon fuel line and vent, new fuel and air filter, bucking dawg, new clutch cover decal. I'd also like to thank Gregg and Mike for some parts for this one:cheers:.
