I am no spring chicken

I have a 4200 I bought new.
I have a 4400/4900/5400 owners manual that came with it.
There are pics of a 4400 with regular bar & one with a bow saw on cover.
The plug specs. are for CJ-8 except for the 5400. It shows UCJ8G.
Module air gap .008" to .014".

I normally set the air gap at .011 to be safe that way it falls in the correct area it calls for

Project: 3400

I am happy to say I have started my 3400. I got this saw a while back, most know the story on it but here's a quick recap. Looks to be a '79-80. Came with a 16" banana bar and sharp 3/8'' chain. Has high compression 150+, good spark, and spotless P&C. The saw itself is in awesome shape. A low hour machine for sure. I was just gonna blow it down and put in a carb kit and lines. Well I decided that wasn't gonna work so its getting torn down pretty far to get a good cleaning and inspection. I removed the covers, carb, flywheel, coil and clutch. Did I say how much I enjoy working on these saws? After getting my 4000, I decided I like the black hood on the green saw. So I gave the covers 2 coats of black primer after a light sanding and 3 coats of black satin finish (one coat on now). The clutch cover was broken so my buddy mike sent me one. Its going to be painted black too, same as the hood. It will also get a new decal thanks to Gregg. These really are my favorite saws!! What you guys think of the black covers?

Hard to see, I had just sprayed them so the paint cloud is still in the air.

Hey Joe,
I like the black covers on them. I found a black cover from a Craftsman (I think) and I like the looks of it. I'll post some pics in a few.

Joe's 3400

Joe, hope you're well. I always appreciate your pictures as you have a massive saw hibernation going on under your bench! Anyway, I too am becoming more and more taken with the Poulan 3400/4000 series. They are indeed fun to work on, and challenging at the same time. I like the "black hat" you've put on that 3400. Are you planning to paint the chain catcher that resides beneath the drive cover too, and what about the recoil housing? You can tell she's a lower hour unit, pretty clean. Nice job! I've found a Farm Hand 375 at one of my local municipality clients, along with some other saws. I'll keep you posted, as I'd never seen one up close before. Pretty cool. Best, and again, great threads! Max.:clap:

Welcome JD. Good to have you here.

Yep I like both of those saws, got some myself of each. As a matter of fact I should have a complete bow setup here in the next week or so to put on one of my 245's.

Now parts are getting hard for these. I see the air filters from time to time on ebay. The clutch springs for the 71-A might be a little harder, but there probably the same as a few of the sand cast model saws.

Send me a PM with a email address and I can hook you up with some parts list for them if you need them and maybe a place that might have the parts you need.

The real question is..................................Does it make YOU happy?

I think the black looks good on the green but I might have set that cover back and used a rough one to paint black.

Thanks Max, and post some pics of your new additions. As far as the clucth cover goes, i only had a few options. I could have left the orig. broken one on, that is green, but that would look like sh!t. I had other 2 covers, one plastic and red, one mag. and gray. I went with the mag. gray one cause I could strip the paint and not worry about destroying the cover. I originally wanted to paint it green, but the paints I found wouldn't match the rest of the saw, which would make it look real hacky. Which is what lead me to black. Hopefully it will look nice all put together.

ModifiedMark looks like the Real McCoy to me :)

Probably no one here old enough to remember that show, but me:cry:

I'm 280 lbs. myself, I figure its just more counter weight to run bigger saws!

Gregg,

I guess I remember all too well. It was called The Real McCoys!

Thanks scott. My 3.7 Craftsman has the black top as well. I like it. Keep an eye on your mail.

Joe, the black doesn't look bad at all. Do you plan on painting the recoil black as well, seeing as how the clutch cover is black? If you want to swap, I have a clutch cover(metal) that I painted Poulan green. Think it has a pretty good decal on it too. Let me know and I'll check and send you a picture of it.

True. As usual I should have asked some opinions first. But, I do think I will like the black hood. I
