Good points John, and beyond that, you can have 3 of the same exact saws and one maybe head and shoulders above the other 2.

When I say I wouldnt be afraid to but the 4900 up against something like I did, I aint saying it will be the faster in a race either. I mean that it will run side by side with the other and not lose by a large margin "if" it did.

Kevin did run both the 475 and 4900 himself and back to back, so like you say the different operators were not in that picture.

Then again, you should have been there to see that!

He would have been there except for getting that sand in his vagina the day before!!!LOL

(I'll take up for ya John!!!)

Hey now don't be picking on me lol...I was a very proud dad that weekend with my daughter Brooke winning the senior home comming queen. I was not going to miss that for no greasy chainsaws...even if they were green.

Poulan 2800

I just bought a Poulan 2800 for $40. very clean, minimally used, and well maintained saw. Does anyone have the specifications on this saw?

I'm not a collector so I took the first gent that contacted me and promised him this 325 if I ended up with it.

Thought I would throw a new dress on the ole girl and get some pics, before getting her ready for a collector. ;)

Hey guys

What is this? Is it worth $15?

cmcs_zpsdd1484af.jpg

Sorry it is sideways, the 'net is screwy today, I fixed that photo three times.

Randy that's part of the 33-42cc Poulan series that includes the older non-stratto Wild Things. This particular saw is a non-AV version. The EPA sticker on the 'boot plate' under the rear handle will have the true displacement. Will say "engine family 42cc" or something similar. Poulan (and therefore Craftsman) often will put a 'downgraded' displacement on the recoil cover sticker when they're meeting a lower price point............................when in fact the saw is actually 40 or 42cc.

With the case it's for sure worth $15, especially if the P/C are in good shape. The piston on those is chromed, with a bare aluminum cylinder bore (like a 3400). Looking in the port will show a bright, shiny piston............even if the cylinder is scored. Most of the time people use those once or twice, and then stick them in the garage with a tank full of fuel. The carb diaphragms, and the fuel lines and purge bulb are often shot from sitting (and that purge bulb does look wasted).......and they pull and pull and pull until they give up on it. $15 in parts and they're back up and running....

Anyone know the National seal numbers for a 3000 off hand? I can look up the part numbers, and if I do that I can use that converter I seen some where. Better eat supper first.

I unfortunately, do not own one of the 77cc Poulans. :( But, one good thing about GTG's, like we had last fall, I got to run Steve's (67 Mustang) 7700 & 8500 back to back. To be honest, running them like that, cutting a few cookies, I couldn't tell much difference. Now if you were to use them felling & bucking large trees for a while, the difference might show up.

I do know how strong the 4200 & 5200 are though in actual cutting conditions. So I would be tickled pink to have one of the 77cc versions and use it for work in the woods. I think if I just had one of the 77cc versions, I would just invest in a variety of bars for it. Maybe a 24" 28" 30" or 32" or even a 36" depending on what I was cutting. I think it would be a very versatile large saw. It would still be more fun to have one of each of those models though!! :D

Gregg,

I have ran large bars 30-36'' on all of the large poulans 4900,7700,5200,5400 and 8500 when I had them all and as Gregg already stated earlier, they all pouled them well with no major difference.

I have never been able to figure out (not that I have actually tried) why the 4900/7700 has so much more power than the eight cc smaller 4200,4400,6900. Yet the 5200,5400 and 8500 which is the same eight cc larger than the 4900/7700 really does not have much of a power difference over the 4900/7700.:msp_confused:

I'm pretty sure the answer will be found in a term the eggheads call "volumetric efficiency", but I agree that the 77cc saws seem unrealistically strong to many others by comparison.

ModifiedMark's 4900 is as strong as (if not stronger than) my 5.2 Craftsman.

Mike

Yep or also known as the the sweet spot!

I think the longest bar I have had on the 4900 was a 28" but I would have no qualms or second thoughts to put a 32" on it if needed. It would do fine with that.

I wouldnt be afraid at all to put it up against a modern 77cc saw like a MS460 with 32" bars either.

I am a poulan guy and thats the bottom line but I have done some comparing myself. I let my buddy run my 505 and I would beat him with my 460. I let my buddy run my 460 and I would out run him with my 505. I let my buddy run my 8500 and I would out run him with my 505. I let my buddy run my 505 and I would out run him with my 8500. What I am saying is all three of these saws are very close in power. My 5400 must have had some work done to it before I bought it for 40 bucks because it would run the pizz out of all of the others even though it looked like it was pouled behind a truck for 30 miles.

Thanks a bunch for the input guys. That's what I was looking for. I'll probably run that 4900 with a 28" or 32" bar most of the time. Will try the 36" for the heck of it. Also may have a rough looking but hopefully good sound 5200 after this weekend as well. If that happens I'll put my 36" bar on that saw and see how they compare.

Of course............if somebody would want to trade a good strong 5200/5400/8500 for my 4900 so they can have the 'complete set' (meaning they have multiple 5200/5400/8500 saws in their collection but no 4900/7700), then I may be up for that (Hi Gregg!). That's putting the kart before the horse however. My 4900 hasn't even been shipped to me yet. I very well may be completely and totally satisfied with how my 4900 runs that 36" bar, and therefore would not want to let it go. Wish it was already here. Going to be doing some cutting this weekend at a volunteer cutting day/GTG.

Did you buy that 4900 that was on eBay a week or two ago? I backed off of bidding on it because it was the first item the guy had ever sold.

That's not the one I got. I did watch that listing just to see where the current ebay 'value' was on these. My 4900 looks even nicer than that ebay saw (from the pics). Mine is coming in trade from another AS member.

Nice score Aaron!

That is a great deal alright. I am way behind on getting some saws up and running right now so I am laying low. I have the 475 to finish and 3450, 365, a dolmar 111 and a 3700, that I have not even touched yet.

I didn't know they had a case that fits them. I had to use a large Husky box for mine, it would not fit in any other Poulan case I have.:hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange:

I have a few of the 330,380,3450,etc series and they are all in poulan cases. I am using the one they call a large case part # 952-031152 and they seem to fit fine.

If you need to get some saws out of the to relieve stress, I'll take the 365. :)
