Nik's Poulan Thread

Speaking only for myself here, but that Craftsman 5.2 is heavy. It's wearing a 24" b/c and will have to come in at around 18+ pounds with fuel, oil, crud, and so forth. I'm 5' 11", 230 pounds and not afraid of work, but I'd have a healthy respect for that saw if I had to use it any length of time.

Would I use it on "big" wood where I could let it sit and dig in using its own weight? Sure. Limb with it? NO!

I'm used to much lighter saws and running a tank through that thing would be the end of my shoulders, not to mention my back.

Now, as to whether or not its heavy for an 85 cc saw --> Dunno. It's the only one I've ever held. It does have a VERY NICE feel to it, despite the weight. It seems to have a good balance and maybe the guys at Poulan spent some time getting the controls and handles "just right" 'cause it seems like it would be very controllable.

Ah, crap. I can't afford to start collecting old Poulans. :bang: I do NOT like this saw. :bang: I do NOT like this saw. I do NOT need more old Poulans. I should sell this saw.

5400 serial number question

A member here was kind enough to pick up a 5400 for me yesterday and will deliver it to me next month at the Central VA GTG. He indicates that the serial number is 125. Did Poulan start with the number 1 or 100 when assigning serial numbers?

I got my 3.7 together. It starts and runs wellt, but I need to tune it in wood. Appreciate the advice I got here. I took Mikes advice and cleaned the piston up and put new rings on it. I gained 20 psi, up to 150. I rebuilt the carb, and a new air filter. Painted it, and made some decals. It had a bad repaint job, probably to sell it on ebay, and the orange was coming off as you handled it. I shot it with self etching primer and some IH red I had left over from the tractor. I was just killing time until the parts came. Sorry Michigan guys, but I have to love the scarlet and gray Buckeye start to my craftsman collection.

Now I have to see if my base sealant holds. Firewood cut this weekend for the landowner who lets us hunt. We'll see how they do.

Man that saw came out good!!! I wanted to make mine look like new with OEM paint but this looks way better! Nice job.

thanks, good info. the self etching primer is a new one on me. probly explains why the saw i painted is having a hard time holding paint at the gas tank. oh btw, really like your red hi/lo screws. accident or on purpose?

Jerry, I use self etching primer all the time. It's best used on bare metal. I also use adhesion promoter on plastic parts. Seems to help hold the paint.

Bob is right on with this... While it will stick to old paint in most cases, its best when sanding or other proper prep methods are not used for bare metals. Hence the "self etching". I use it on odd shaped decorative metal projects a lot to give better adhesion. If you want to go over sanded metal and paint, use a good epoxy primer and call it a day.
