I remember it and the picture he posted of it as well.

Not seen it in person but I thought it was a poor match myself from the pictures.

A good automotive pair would sure hold up to gas better and also last longer as well.

I would think anyone going through all the trouble to restore a saw and all the work to get it in shape to paint wouldn't want all that work wasted on cheap paint.

It was my camera work that was at fault, the paint looked better in person than it did in that pic. Of course if you touch up a saw with new paint as I did (clutch cover) it's gonna look newer than the faded paint on the rest of the saw. The paint can, of course, be made tougher by coating it with PPG Quik Clear with hardener, which I've done before, but then it's not a rattle can.

Did anybody ever try the Rustoleum Lime paint that I suggested about 2 years ago? I've used it on my Poulans and can't tell the difference between it and the Poulan green. It's available at Rural King for much less than $25..I think it's $3.95.

I'm all about the cheap rattle can paints.

Of course I dont usually paint chainsaws either unless it is just for kicks. :msp_biggrin:
The lime I used was even cheaper then above and was close enough for me. Maybe just a hair lighter but lime green as heck even though my cheap camera dont show it.

Just painted these covers as a gag for my project green jeans 505.

This is how my 4200 looks like after the paint.i know that the color isn't an excact match but this is a work saw so i don't mind.I painted it only because the saw is in excellent working condition with very low hours but was really rough on the apearence.Anyway, pics:

i'll let the paint to dry a couple days more and then i'll aplly the decals.

Tim,
I'm very anxious to see your 5200 & 4200 and how it turns out. I think I will paint my other 5200 this summer. But I'm not going to tear it all down and blast it. Will just try and degrease and sand some by hand and mask things off the best I can. It will remain a "work saw" anyway.
My 4200, I will just leave it as is. It don't look bad, and is a work saw also.
My cousin restores cars and has a nice Snap-on blast cabinet that I used on my 5200 parts. I hate to keep using somebody else's tools like that. LOL So will be a hand sanding job.

Gregg,

This is how i did mine Gregg.I don't think there is need for a full disassemble.Just mask with newspaper the important, cylinder, coils, flywheel etc and paint it,like i did.

I've got to say I sure envy you guys for all the older saw purchase opportunities you have in the US. I have never seen a 306 or 245 come up for sale and the only 5200 / 4200 I saw come up I bought. One 4000, a few 3700's a PP505 and a bunch of 3400's, mostly rebranded ones.

It seems like the area I live in is a Homelite mecca. Good saws but they just don't feel good in my hands.

SNOOZE YOU LOSE MAN!

2550 carb setting

Anyone got a ball park on these guys? It sez 42cc on the plate. I tried 1 to 1 1/4, no dice at all. itll start then fall flat on its face. I gradually ran them out to 2, same deal. About 90 seconds at first it ran real good, then bupkis. Near new looking saw. New lines, installed correctly, carb cleaned, put back together correctly, filter good. Wasnt even that dirty it just had a deteoriated fuel line.

TIA

For some reason my camera makes mine look more yellow than lime. Maybe I just don't know how to use it..

I am at near 3 low and 1.5 high on a strato 42cc AVX . Cut with it once and ran well, but still in disbdlief that is how it should be.

I do not believe that Rustoleum has any UV protection and fades in the sun. I painted a Studebaker fire truck with a roller and a gallon of safety red paint and it faded within a couple of years. But for $40 for the roller, paint and sandpaper it looked great.

Hitting it with a clear coat would certainly help. There are some places that will custom mix rattle cans for you.

Did you set the metering level of the carb?It seems that the fuel is not enough.Tank vent?My 2250 runs at 1 1/2 on the low and 1 1/14 on the high.

Nope didnt set it, and slap forgot to make a note of which model carb it was when I had it off. Most likely I will have to pull it again and recheck everything, it should run just fine theoretically, it starts easy enough like it is.. I *do* remember some other poulan I worked on had way screwy carb adjustments, way past two out, both screws. Who knows..usually I can dial carbs in pretty quickly once they are running, I dorked around with this for 15 minutes and went heck with this, back to the bench, and go ask a question...

Just made some cuts with 445 with 20" buried. :msp_biggrin:

I left the green coil in being I was out of black 5000 55 coils. Turns out this green one shows no signs of the rev-limited like other green ones in 475 at 10k.
I took it from 10k to 12.2k with no limited. Going to let her go to 14k later to see if it's for real.

Thanks Joe (or are you 'Arnie' now?). Coffee hasn't quite taken hold yet. *yawn*

That's just my AS name. It's really Joe but that name has been taken. Palmer isn't my last name either..kinda like Warped5 isn't your real name either. lol
There's a thread on AS about user names and why we chose the names we have, some are quite good..
