For those of you that have done a muffler mod on a 295.
Mine has a one piece muffler so I went in through the exhaust port in the back of the muffler and ground a slot in the divider between the top and bottom halves and opened it with a screwdriver and then added a small port (like a mini 4000 port) on the left side in the top half of the muffler. That should get the exhaust gas flowing better.

The question is; the heat shield that fits inside the exhaust port in the cylinder looks like one more restriction. Did you guys leave the shield in or trash it?I kind of figure that a free flowing muffler should run a lot cooler.

Thanks

I threw the little SOB in the garbage and widened the port out to where the durn thing used to be.
I didn't have any problems with the saw at all.
I run Klotz R-50 at 36:1 and didn't have anything but a little discoloration. No actual carbon build up at all.

Is there a Poulan lovers gtg thread or date, and address?

Justin,

Ohio Gregg has been hosting them and as I recall they have been in early October. I have not heard what plans he may have for this year, you may try PM'ing him. He is located outside Jenera, OH. For travel purposes, add 4.5 hours to what it takes you to get to Lexington.

I been mulling it over. I guess Oct 12th. is what I've settled on. We could delay that a week, if its gonna conflict with any other GTG's around that time. I know Wigg's usually has one in the fall. Was thinking his is in Sept. not sure.

Like Gary said, I'm near Jenera, Oh. Its a dot on a map. I'm about 70 miles strait east of Fort Wayne Ind. on US Rt. 30. and about 70 miles strait west of Mansfield Oh.

Gregg,

I got another one of the plastic poulans going the other day, put on a new loop of 91VG, and managed to slip the clutch cutting 6" white oak. I was bearing down on the saw pretty hard, but I would think that the clutch should hold well enough to drag the saw down and kill it. The saw did drop rpm, but kept on pulling. Should I pull the clutch/drum and rough up the surfaces with some sandpaper? If it's glazed, I don't know if that will remove it or not. Spray both parts with brake cleaner?

Hey! are these things any good???

Very nice Mark. Is that the original decal on the side? Looks like it is in pretty good shape.

Sold my house and starting my move to Wyoming tomorrow.

The ones I have done I throw that heat shield away. I also take the exhaust deflector inside the muffler and cut about 2/3rds of it away and then re-install it. The last one I did I welded up the back and did the ModifiedMark special on both sides of the muffler.

Took the new 5200 out for its first test drive today. I don't have enough wood, or too much bar...LOL Hard to give it a true go with the 30" bar in that size wood. But, the saw works, still keeping it on the rich side. Just playing with it a little, there is a lot of rpm's left in it. Heres a pic and a short video. So I don't want to hear, "no pics or video it didn't happen. :D

Gregg,

Wow! That saw turned out nice! I guess the P/C worked out OK.

You can't kill a chainsaw engine by bogging it down unless something is wrong with the clutch.
When the RPM's drop, the clutch springs pull the shoes away from the drum and allow it to slip until the operator releases the pressure on the chain and allows it to turn again.
There is nothing wrong with your clutch, it did it's job.
