Tim, I checked my 4200 also. #516071 Ribbed case, single screw cover. None of my Poulans in that series have the "grip safety" on the handles.

As for the Canadian built or marketed saws in that mid-size series, I don't have a clue. :msp_ohmy: All kinds of variations in those, even more so than the US marketed saws.

Just for my own curiosity, would like to see the lowest # and highest serial# 5200 & 4200 amongst us Poulan Nuts. Could be a decieving thing I suppose. They maybe didn't start at #001 or whatever.

Gregg,

I guess the throttle lock-out was made for markets where it was a legislated piece of safety eqquipment.
As far as the serial numbers go; my experience in manufacturing is that companies often set aside blocks of serial numbers for specific models or families that share the same similarites. That way there were never two different models with the same serial numbers but these block of numbers allowed easier ID if a recall came about. Still, we are around 300,000 + saws in that group just with the umbers a few of us have posted up.
Where the heck did they all go? Maybe there's an old warehouse around in the Texas desert with thousands of these in it.
Bob, get searching.

I only have 4 of my 4200/5200 saws here and one is a Dayton so that is no help (though the serial number looks to be low at D1000283). This is what I found:

715375 - 5200 with black top and screws
523164 - 5200 with black top and pins (nut on top)
725485 - 4200 with green top and screws

I do have a 5200 with a green top and pins back in VA.

Well, I see we are only 4,293 saws apart Gary, with black top 5200's with screws. That is still a lot of saws..LOL

Gregg,

I picked up a bit of firewood today that was all small but abut 500 lbs of it. Diameter was 5- 6" and since I was very low on mix I thought I'd just use the little Echo CS310 (my ATV trail saw) to cut it into manageable lengths then finish cutting splitting it next week.
That was my first saw and it's seen quite a bit of cutting time. I always thought it did well for it's size.
Funny how your perspective changes after you've done most of your recent cutting with 46cc - 69cc saws.
It did seem a bit slower than I remember but still made noise and threw chips.

I had some cutting to do today, small saplings nothing worth pics, but I used my 330. It's funny the hardest part about cutting is picking a saw. I only used it once so far on a maple and I was very happy with it. Today was no different, I bet if I was "normal" that's the only saw I'd need.

Try having four 330's like I did when you purchased that one from me. That was the boat I was in when trying to decide which one to run :monkey:

PP655 bar assistance

Posted this in the Pioneer thread, too ..

Had not yet cut with the saw since I got it.

At the IN GTG yesterday, chain didn't seem to be getting enough oil. I had made earlier cuts that seemed fine. Set the saw aside to sort out today.

I know nothing of the Poulan Pro bar, other than it has a .404 sprocket nose on it.

Does someone know the specs on this 36" bar? The numbers off it are:

952-044356
3663 8019 GQN
Made in Canada

Thanks!

That should be the correct bar, did you turn the oiler up?

I can't help you with the chain gauge if thats what you're looking for but the manual indicates that sometimes the sintered plug in the oil cap gets plugged and should be blown out.
If you are looking for the company that made the bar, post a pic of the tip. Most of the Poulans in Canada came with Windsor bars (mine did anyway) and the Pioneer bars have a different style replaceable sprocket nose / tip.
.058 chain is very common around here.

Hiya Randy - I did check the oiler out when I cleaned the saw out after purchase. IIRC, I turned it out about 3/4 of total travel; but didn't 'force' anything.

I've now opened it all the way, but realize that it still might not be enough for a 36" bar.

I noticed the manual pump has a small bit of slop in it. Will compare against a spare that came with the saw.

I should be able to test cut later in the week and will report back.

Thanks!

Ran it again today in some maple. The guy I was getting it from works at Home Depot. When I took the saw out he said "we sell those." I said ''not this model".

Hi Tim - Blow out the plug - will add that to the 'to do' list.

Here's the requested bar tip picture:

Oregon Power Match.

The oil line on my P51 (same frame as the 655) was pretty rotten. I replaced it with Tygon. I only have a 24" bar on it right now but it does oil heavily, even when turned down.

A decayed pickup line can collapse. Had that happen with an SXL-AO recently. All the sudden it stopped pumping oil (auto or manual). Pulled the pickup (expecting to see a clogged pickup screen) and instead saw a very soft, decayed line that'd collapsed to the point of looking like a tape worm. A new line got the saw back in business.

Looks like I have my marching orders ..

- Check the slop in manual pump
- Disassemble and check all the lines (3)
- Give automatic pump a good visual once-over

I'll report my findings later in the week .. thanks guys!

Hey Wingnut, you said it was doing well earlier, did you check the oil hole in the bar to make sure it didn't get plugged up?
