you're most likely correct about will it be noticed in the cut BUT you've got it put back together already so just put a b&c on it and cut something. you'll always wonder if you don't. you probly already said but i'm wondering how many different gauges you tried on it. also, does it pass the "hang it by the pull rope" test? i've got some that couldn't hold themselves up if they were sitting on the table but they still cut great. go figure. could also be the ring is taking a bit to break in; i hear tell that synthetic oil can cause that.

Tested my gauge on my 3400 and it hit 130, which is typical. It also pulls much harder tough my 3400. Guess I'll have to get a bar and chain to really test it.

This 90 comp issue is bugging me. While it starts easily and runs at wot great I don't have a bar and chain for it so I wonder if the low comp will be noticed in the cut. My gut says "yes". I put in a new ring so I'm wondering if the piston or cylinder is worn. I rehabbed the cylinder with muriatic acid and fine sandpaper and it came out ok. A worn out cylinder or piston would seem to be the. Most likely culprit. If so I wonder what my options are?

I am inclined to wonder if you are getting a good seal at the threads with that saw.
It would take a pretty good leak to lose that much compression, but it must be something similar.
I've never seen a cylinder worn so badly that a new ring would only bring it up to 90, and that includes the aluminum bore cylinders like a 3400 and 3300.
I believe I'd put a bar and chain on it and run it lightly for an hour or so and recheck the compression when it cools.
Then pull the muffler and spark plug and see if there is any additional damage. If not, give it some heavy cutting and see what happens.

Mike I'm assuming ur referring to the sparkplug hole. Yea, I can't see it leaking that much. I'll have to get a bar and chain and put it through its paces. Then check comp

You didn't put a extra cyl gasket on top of the insulator did you?

Scott, I think the forum rules require that list of saws be sent to me by PM for my chance at any Poulans at half the asking price before you list them in the classifieds (under Auctions now):givebeer:
 
Gosh, I'm not sure Mark. I did use Permatex No.1 but don't recall if I used a gasket. Certainly something to ponder. Thanks for the suggestion.

Well the 325 used a base gasket then a insulator on top of that, just checking to see that you didn't put a gasket on top of the insulator as well as under it as well.

The package showed up today also, thanks a lot.
 
A search for "poulan clutch tool" on amazon or ebay will turn up the correct tool. I'm pretty sure bailey's has them too. I made my own.

"Poulan clutch tool" will turn up many of the tools for the newer models, the tool for the 5200 is not the same.

Ended up bein' a 2 saw deal. Ad said, Plulon & Sears Chain Saws -- $50.

Silly me. I thought he meant $50 for BOTH of em.:msp_w00t:

Ended up offering the pair to me for $37.50 each if I'd get em both out of his hair and take the cool-ass, heavy duty, peavey/cant hook and that insane 15# splitting maul off his hands while I was at it. Even rustled up a nice little Mac bar and a coupla 1/4" chains to round it all out.

Very cool old guy who was simply downsizing and heading to condo world from the place he and his wife built together years ago. Jes wanted lots of stuff to go away fast so he wouldn't have to move and/or store it.

So..., looks like I ended up with a red "Plulon" and a yeller J-Red if I have the whole Partner/J-red/Elux/Poulan thing understood correctly.

I'll try to post a couple pics of the 415 when I get some time to clean it up a bit, but both saws run and came with their original owner's manuals as this guy was the original owner of both. A little dirty, but in pretty good shape otherwise except for the top cover on the 415 having some "melt" action just above the muffler.

3400 3700 3800 Poulan clutches

Good idea. I'll look at my parts saws tomorrow if I remember. One is a red 3.4 and the other is a green 3400. Both have the 'hex' later rear handle buffer spacers IIRC...........so they probably aren't early saws.

There are two different clutch spiders for the 3400/3700/3800 Poulans, the flush face type clutch came in yesterday & works
well with the Oregon rim drive drum 28187X. The collared type will only work with the Poulan OEM drums that are depressed in the center about a 1/4" deep. I don't think this was a Craftsman versus Poulan related issue, but more dependant on the PowerSharp option using the deeper drums.

Can't find the spider number changes on the IPLs either
