Don't get me wrong, he loves his Poulans, I got him hooked on them years ago when he got sick of Homelite, 330 comes to mind, worse piece of junk I ever saw, constant problems. Brother bought him a Sthil and it sat for a year til his old Poulan's piston got scuffed up. It had five years of hard abuse, was a tuff saw and it was a Wild Thing. I got his wood shark limb saw on the bench now.p

scuse me for asking a dumb question but why does everybody mount the spinner and breaker so far apart? got a set i been contemplating on how to mount and just want to know.
also been trying to figure out how to keep all the pieces in close proximity to each other.

You need lot of room to maneuver the chain around, it is very hard to lay the chain down in the correct location to break etc. especially if you are dealing with 3 plus ft of 404. I will be mounting a pad for the chain rolls as well as a few bins to hold the links etc.

Ugh. I never get sick, but it seems I making up for it today. Fever, chills and other not fun stuff. Sucked it up and went to work, but moving equipment wasn't gonna happen today. Takes a lot to side line me, the urge to tear into that pp 25 is strong. If I feel a little better I might sneak down to the shop for a bit. This lounging on the couch stuff for my BIL, not me.

hope you get well soon, it sucks getting sick especially when you are full throttle most of the time.

Hope you get to feeling better. I'm interested in what you come up with as the reason for all that compression in the 25, too. I have a similar issue in one of my little Poulans, but haven't gotten into it. Pulls over nice and smooth without the plug. Put the plug back in? I'm afraid to put too much ass into it for fear of breaking either the rope, the recoil, or my wrist!

All my S25s have good compression, better than a comparable 3400, but those trick you and usually run fine. The 38cc S25DAs always have better compression than the 38cc micros. I'm not a big fan of the micro series, but I do recognize they are a good saw and might be the best in their class. I've heard the compression feels high due to a smaller starter pulley. But the micros are smaller still.
I never complain about good compression though

Anybody have, or used, the Poulan P3400 series bearing & seal driver tools #5300 03158 & #5300 31074 ?

No I never have that I can remember. There kinda salty if you do find them. I just drive the bearings with a bushing driver and adjust the depth for the crank end play.

I just use a socket for the seals.

Nik, or someone he knows, has a complete set of 3400 service tools and was going to make up new sets of them. I told him to put me at the top of the list for a set but I think he has been way to busy to get to it yet.

At least that's what the slacker said. :ices_rofl:

Thanks Mark, large end play still bothers me for some reason. Those tools are NLA & have been for some time now. If anything, I'll be sure & measure the depth on both sides with a gauge when/if I take that saw apart. I assume they are designed to be set the same depth anyways. The driver tool would save a lot of disassembly & reassembly time to get the bearings set correctly.
