I poked at my Mastercraft branded 3400 tonight, determined it needs a fuel filter. As I was poking around, I noticed what seems to be a return or vent line going into the tank as well.. This line is brittle and disintegrated as I poked at it.

I found an IPL with a quick bit of googling, but the line doesn't turn up on it. Anyone know what diameter it is? Wondering about buying some different size lines in bulk, along with filters - as I service my "fleet".

There should be a white barbed fitting on the vent line that holds the external 1/8 3/16 line. Internal to the tank is the duckbill on the fitting and the vent line is on the barb. When you pull it from the tank it friction fits into the tank hole. The line is the same size for both fuel and vent.

Most of mine have 3/16" OD X 3/32 ID but the 1/8" ID is correct. They both work well but the 3/32 is a little tougher to get on the carb and the filter.. I can get the 3/32 stuff locally where as I have to order the 1/8" stuff. No issues with fuel delivery through the smaller line.

ModifiedMark did a great tutorial on the fuel line & related parts on these some time ago, but I can't seem to find it.
Don't know if it was lost to the big hack, or I'm just to stupid to find it. :(

In this pic, you can see the white fitting that the duckbill attaches to, from the inside, and the fuel line to the other, then pulled through the hole. The open end just gets tucked up under the switch or wherever. Its open to the atmosphere, so when your carb sucks fuel to the engine, air can get in the tank to replace it. Or you would be creating a vacuum, (sp?) and no fuel would get to the carb.

Gregg,

Alright. Thanks guys. I want to order some of this line, as well as filters in bulk - say 50' of line and a couple dozen filters. I need to sort out what a few common sizes are - but 1/8 and 3/32 sound about right (I.D)

Any suggestions for quality material line?

I think most just use Tygon fuel line. ModifiedMark came up with a new version from Oregon I believe, that has a higher tolerance of ethanol. Suppose to stay softer, not get so stiff over time exposed to alcohol.

Gregg,

I think I avoid ethanol here by using mid-grade (89 octane) but yes, I'm interested to see the Oregon line

I have not tried any of the NEW Oregon line yet. Still have some Tygon around. I know Mark went through ALL his saws and replaced the line with this new stuff. And thats a lot of saws.. :D As I recall it was yellow, just like the Tygon usually is, maybe a little cloudier looking, if that makes any sense..LOL

Gregg,

Thanks for taking the time to mention that, as well as explaining the vent a bit. I'll dive in. It will kill me to wait for the line, I'll likely buy smaller quantity locally just to get my mastercraft 3400 running.. The order was meant to be bulk with savings accordingly for the rest of my saws. I've got a few I've fired off prime shots that I know need the work.

If you have a service manual for these saws. It will explain the line lengths to use, and the procedure for pulling the line through with a piece of wire. Its actually pretty easy if ya follow the directions in there. Of course you need duckbill valves, they are cheap, and were available from Poulan last I knew.

Good call Tim. The 3/32 does make up a larger OD once on the fitting. Makes for an really good seal between tank orifice and line/fitting.

Gregg,

Here is the new line I got the other day from a US supplier. I thought I was getting the other Tygon I am accustomed to. This new stuff is marked Tygon Oregon. It seems to have the same physical properties as my older sample. Chemical properties...time will tell. I can't say what the ethanol rating is, but I always run 94 non-ethanol fuel as it is available locally.

Banana bar ?

Can't quite tell if that is banana or not, I don't think so. Your chain is correct though. Banana nose isn't a technical term for them...its just a term "us Poulan guys use" .:) I think Poulan used the term "Control Tip" Here is a pic of one. The nose of the bar has an upturn to it. Only problem with them is you can't turn them over, they only can be used one way.
