Only thing I can come up with, the first saw in that line, the 3400 had a solid (closed) cover. The second version, the 3700, had slots, maybe for more air flow? The last version, the 4000, was again closed, but has openings at the upper front for air flow. But probably stays cleaner up there with the opening in front. Beats me. But they all seem to work pretty well. If I noticed anything at all over the years, I think the 3400 style gets dirtier faster than the others.

I know I always carry a small soft bristle brush in my saw "possibles" box. So I can clean air filters out in the woods.
Brush em off and knock em against the trailer. LOL Then use compressed air when back at the shop, when servicing them.

Gregg,

Thanks Nate, Was just wondering if anybody ever came up with a good answer as to why Poulan used a slotted, open air cleaner on the 3700, but not on any of their other saws? You would think if it was a good idea for that saw, it would be also for the others. Could never figure that out.

Gregg,

Who knows why? Was the slotted cover more expensive to produce?

Was it to Sears specs? Got to remember the customer ( Sears in this case) got the final word most the time.

Fired up the 3.7 and it runs great. I knew it would though:) its quieter than I thought with that muffler mod. It's itching for some wood though!

Nate, Funny you mention that about the quietness of that muffler mod. I noticed the same thing also. Mark did one for me some years back. I use it on my most used 4000. One would thank they would be loud. Not so.
The 4000 I put together from extra parts for a friend, I used an old muffler that I hat drilled a couple holes in the front cover. (was a early lazy mans mod) :dizzy: That thing is ear splitting compared to Mark's version.

Gregg,

I am lovin the green. Green saws, green grass and green trees.......oh yea green is good

Stephen, At this point of winter from hell II, Anything GREEN is a welcome sight! Right now its just white & brown. Mud where snow has melted. :( But, I'll take it, it got up to 50 yesterday.

Gregg,

Can't see from yer pix. What does marks mm look like? Mark, how did you do it. Got a red one I need to mm. Less loud is good
Jerry, This is one of Mark's mufflers. They resemble one from a 4200/5200

You know what to do, tear into it.

I got a Wright chainsaw on the bench right now. I still scratch my head and wonder exactly why Poulan bought out Wright.

The more I see there saws, the more I'm convinced there the most overbuilt on the outside and underbuilt inside.

We be up for leftovers from that pup as the internals of the C-70 here are rusted to hell.

Just sayin'.

Gregg,

Yeah is weird, my 3400 I did with the side muff mod made itlouder but it just has the slit cut in the side and the holes inside drilled out bigger.

Yup, Thats the way I did this last 3400. Cut a slot and bend and shape it a bit. Bout as simple as it gets. Along with drilling the internal diffuser and doing away with the screen.
