The Craftsman 2.3 (older model S25CVA) has a Tillotson carb that is stamped HU10A506. Double checking - is RK-14HU the correct rebuild kit?
I would clean up all the exhaust parts first. The square thing is the diffuser and support for the muffler assy. Most of us will drill out the holes to a larger dia. and ditch the very restrictive spark screen. Some areas I know they are required. But not in my area.
