Im going to change them, it seems like a air leak, but it never leans out under WOT though which says it might not be leaking air. It wont stay adjusted on the lo side and idle speed doesnt stay consistent. I may try a different carb and do a leak test also

I think youre right i could do a quick n dirty test and spray around with carb spray with it running,

Neither. They tend to come loose. Only way to correct is to pull cylinder.

Well i know its not loose i checked them when i had the carb off, bc i had one come loose on another one before. Ill do some leak testing its gotta be pulling air from somewhere it shouldnt.

Check the intake gasket.

Sounds like Tim is telling you the same as I did. Don't sweat the bearings unless there god awful.

I think if you have one that your worried about, then I would use a spur sprocket on it instead of a floating rim. That will help keep the crank end play in line.

Has anyone ever used a winter kit on a 3400 series saw? It consists of wire strips and wire ties for the recoil housing and a 3700 style air filter top?

Here is a picture of the kit

Ive never seen one of those before, or heard of one

455 back on the bench I went and started over.n Will not idle low enough to stop chain. Idle would change when saw is turned on it side.

Saw holds vac/pressure
Went to dinner with the wife and forgot about it hour and a half later still holds vacuum .
Back to the carb.
Dropped it in sea foam looks like I will need to pull the welch plug or just replace carb.
Never had much luck once I open one up that far
Someone told me to use acrylic finger nail polish to make sure plug seals and only install to the plug to the height of the body

I found the clutch spring well about an inch of it on the shop floor

I use fingernail polish sometimes, sometimes not depends on if the wifes around to find it for me lol. Sometimes i think we chase phantom air leaks that are really a problem with a carb that cant be fixed with a kit. Sometimes it takes a new carb.

Yep did that once before.
It was also a wj walbro
I will keep looking for one but I have the kit just need to try one more time

If you want to spend $85 for a 306A I can provide a runner with 120 PSI compression.

I messed with the 306A some more last night, thought it didn't sound like it should, muffler was pretty muffled...so I removed the cover and found three added baffles in addition to the original. Evidently someone didn't like the noise. I removed the extras and now it sounds a bit more correct and seems to run better as well. Cylinder looks extremely good through the exhaust port though the piston seems to have some carbon stains on the skirts. I don't really need this one so if anyone would like a 306A it will be available.

It currently has a 20" sprocket nose bar and Vanguard chain but I will replace the chain with a loop of semi-chisel or chisel and pass the Vanguard along to Philbert.

I also pulled this Super 25 out and thought I'd test the compression, it felt pretty good just pulling it over.

Spark was good so I put a little prime right down the throat and it immediately fired up. I had already dumped the old mix out, didn't even smell of gas any more...

Fuel cap is missing the duckbill valve, how do you remove those star washer retainers? I have seen that in a few other Poulan fuel caps and I expect they all need attention.

This one may need a little cleaning before we call it good.

I need to find some of those foam air filters, this one just crumbles if you touch it.

Same for the small foam seal around the throttle shaft.

Any suggestions for low price foam will be appreciated.

Oregon still makes replacment air filters and I just use a piece of foam from like a lawn mower filter to cut out and make a new boot for the throttle rod. 5 minute job at the most. I have some NOS foam throttle boots but like most 40 year old foam parts, they ain't too good.

I remove the star washers for the duckbill's with a o ring pick I guess you would call it. I drive them back in flat and snug with a barrel from a Bic stick pen.

Almost 40 years ago, the S25CVA and a 306A were all I had (and could barely afford) to heat my home with. They cut tons of wood without any drama or trouble. Two of the best saws made in those days.

The compression on that saw isn't bad, it should run fine like that, they were not real high compression saws. That muffler came with 2 baffles and a spark screen. More then that would really choke it down for sure.

To be honest, I recomend anyone with one of this series of Poulans to tear it down to the point of removing the top tank/handle assembly to replace the foam seal between the tank/handle assy and the crankcase. Most of the foam seals have turned to dust by now and will allow junk to bypass the air filter.
