I would take the carb off, clean it, and also check the diaphragms in the carb. They should be soft, not hard and brittle. A good place to start on these saws is 1 1/4 turns out on both needles.

yup. Normal settings are 1 1/4 open. Good starting point. Rebuild carb( you will need a 5/16 wrench ground down in order to get at the clutch side lower screw). Be sure the metering lever is set level with carb body and metering needle moves easily up and down. The carb has a governor and that might be causing HI speed issues. There is a post earlier in this Thread that discusses the topic.

the air filter cover cowl seems a lil different.... also i could not find a vent line /breatherline it does seem to have one in the fuel cap... this drawing shows that line 92 with the lil breather screw i could not find one it seems to run fine starts up a lil hard but maybe it just needs to be run a lil i have a thought it sat along time!!! so the latest date on this drawing was 97is that maybe how old it is is there any place to look for a date on the saw? thanks for the parts list also!

I looked for a earlier drawing on outdoordistributors but it is not working. Try looking up your saw on ordertree.com

Thanks for the info; it is very much appreciated. I must admit I do not know what you mean by "metering lever." I have the schematics of the carb (http://www.billious.com/ipls/pwe/245A.pdf), but it is not listed. Perhaps it goes by another name? If I am correct, it's the same as the inlet lever and needle?

I'll try my luck at searching through the 300 pages of this thread to find the info you mention regarding the governor.

Thanks again.

You can look up the date on acresinternet.com chainsaw collectors corner.

Yes it is the inlet lever.

As promised here are a couple of pics of the new (to me) 5.2 and a couple of the "red headed stepchildren" the 4.2 that I got from jnl502 and the new 5.2.

Crankcase bearings Poulan 4200 Countervibe

Evening,

Quick question, trying to get the most out of one of my 4200's after close inspection carb rebuild, electrical maintenance etc has a decent amount of horizontal movement in the crankshaft and I suspect the bearings have seen better days.

My problem is that I cannot find a part listing for the crankcase bearings and without pulling the saw down I cannot match them, just not had time. Does anyone have a part number or information on a suitable replacement bearing?

Regards,

Justin

nice haul!

nice saws moparman!!!!! these are 3 of the ones i got over the weekend all run after cleaning and fuel lines etc!i had been looking for a poulan in green like the top handle craftsman but in liking the ger and black it runs real good now!!!!!

Thats a great looking pair Mike:clap: That 5.2 looks like its had very little use.
(yes, I'm jealous) LOL. Have ya run them yet? or you gonna give them a good going over first?
Gregg,

Gregg,

The 4.2 is a great runner.
The 5.2 runs but I'm going to go through it with a fine toothed comb before I "put it through its paces".
I expect to do the normal fuel lines and carb rebuild, maybe seals.

Justin, the brgs are a 203 or 6203 brg. Size is 17mm x 40mm x 12mm. Try to get C3 rated brgs if you can.

The crank seals that I use are Federal Mogul/National Oil seals part# 471466 and are size .625" x 1.24" x .250"

Yes I got up from my comfortable computer chair to go out to the shop to get this info for you. :givebeer:

The rest of you guys feel free to write this down. LOL

Yes check the seals, remember how mine had one blown out of it when I got it.

Now I see why you were giggleing like a school girl when you called. Very nice! If I wouldnt have had one, I would have been driving to Indy to get that one.

Glad to see that saw is nicer then you expected and glad you got it and am really glad the seller was a honest man of his word.

Most of all I'm glad you finally got your 5200 so you can play with the big boys now. LOL

wow...great find...

I have my origional owners manual for my Craftsman 4.2/24" 5.2/30" chainsaw that I bought in 1980. I should have sent it down to Indiana with Chris's 271 Canadien so Mark could copy it . He asked me for copies a long time ago but I don't have any way to make them. I will mail it down there if one of you guys would mail it back. There isn't much useful stuff in there but it looks kind of cool and it goes with those saws.

Stephen, you could just slip it in a envolope and mail it to me and when I get time I'll scan it into a PDF and send the original back to you. I can then share the pdf with others through email.

Scott, come on, your better then that! That saw is not a 2800 no way, no how. Its probably based on a 2900 saw.

Whatca guys think of this.....

The good: Arm rippin compression. Fires on prime. Very little paint wear, came with a nice 24" .404 setup. :)

The bad: Missing top covers, rear handle is broken, air filter mount is broken and a chip from the bottom of the clutch cover. :(

Anyways, I figured you Poulan heads would want a looksie. If anybody has any parts, let me know. Its the same as the Dolmar 144. I gotsta run this baby!!!

Nice Jeremy. Good luck getting the parts that you need. You may get ahold of Scott at the cutting edge and see if he can help you get what you need.

Alright Mike! Great score! Nothing wrong with the red/black saws.
If I ever get done working on this house Im hoping to start saw scavenging and wrenching. Im here digging stumps and clearing brush and you guys are getting all the saws! Ill be using this red head tomorrow actually.
And this saw (along with some other mean green) is gonna save me $$ by heating my house.

stubnail, I looked up your model on sears parts.com and the crankcase does look like the 2900. The sears crankcase/cylinder part number is 530071490. The poulan website 2750 2900 crankcase/cylinder part number is 530014943. The poulan website 2900 crankcase/cylinder part number is 530014943. Here is a 2900 IPL. http://weborder.husqvarna.com/order_static/doc/NUIS/NUIS2008/NUIS2008_530081399.pdf outdoordistributors.com IPL's are not working so maybe someone has a older IPL that would list your (sears 530071490)crankcase/cylinder number.
