I picked up a Poulan 71a last night and am thinking about muffler modding it.:jester:

What's the through hole in the top of the casting for?

Can somebody post the pics for me? I can't get them to attach from my phone.

Compression feels strong. I'll put a gauge on it and have a little more time to mess withit this evening.

How's this for $35 shipped? Hopefully the P&C are OK and just needs a fuel line/carb cleaning.

S25CVA, not bad Brad. Looks to be in real good shape. I have one and enlarged the baffle holes and exhaust holes in the muffler cover. Seemed to really improve it, though it was pretty strong before for a 38cc saw. The CVA really cuts down on the vibs.

Gottcha. In your quote you describe using a 'DRIFT'. I presume that's a DRIFT PUNCH' ?
poulan2075clutchsprocket0071.jpg

Yup. Shoulda been a little clearer. I use one small enough to fit on the end of the center clutch arms(above the directional arrow or above the M6) near the clutch spring. If its never been removed before you may have to give it several firm hits but it will loosen using the rope in the cylinder to stop the piston.

Look what happens when you don't check for a while--a Poulan thread and 473 pages! Have two 3700's, both working, done several repairs on both. Bought my first one (3400) in 1983 from a small logging shop in the Slocan valley ("Iz gud saw but Gud demn loggers von't buy--iz not orench!--dey all vant orench!"). Got stolen. Replaced it with an O34--got stolen (we have druggies here). Bought one 3700 on ebay, then got another for parts. Turned out both were so good I got them both running; used regularly, one with 18" bar and one with 20". Excellent saw, but not good for logging; handle castings have thin parts prone to breaking--even I tripped over one and broke it. Repaired again thanks to ebay.

Compliments Homelite 750 on big end, Makita 16" electric(!) on other. Bought a PP 2036 as an interim saw, constant trouble with the oiler; just not a serious saw.

Yea, I've got three 3400, 3700 rear handles with busted left half handles . The left side half seems to be the one that always breaks, as its the weakest side. Can't find left side only halfs, so I look for whole handles or old part saws.

ok i'll try that i know the dealer told me that he does it out 1 1/2 turns and go from there but i figure i would ask on here to.because they are a lot of pros on here that is better then the dealer lol. but i'll go try that and find out what it will do

Nooo thats not an S25 redunshee, thats a micro 25 CVA.

Anyway cool, I was watching that on ebay, but have enough micros.

Can you give more explanation? It's labeled as a micro S25CVA. I'm admittedly new to these.

Well as far as I can tell the Micros have more plastic, eg. fuel tank. I thought Micros were 2.0 as opposed to the 2.3 of the S25 class saw. Maybe yours is a newer saw. It looks exactly like my Craftsman, except for the color. My Craftsman is 2.3 cc and 38ccs whereas the Micros mentioned above are 33ccs, I believe. Now, Mark told me my saw was more like the Poulan 2300AV or CVA. I'd say yours is also similar which would make it a newer saw than the S25da or CVA made by Baird- Poulan as opposed to Poulan/Weedeater. Almost forgot that mine doesn't have an additional manual oiler which the older S25das have.

Brad,

The regular S25 is considerably bigger and is more of a Pro saw than the Micro series. They are all great little saws and are VERY powerful for their size.

The ignition switch and the carb cover are the easy way to tell from a distance or in a picture.

The ignition switch on the S25 is like a 3400-4000 and is mounted through the case (except for the very early ones with the slide switch, but that's another story) while the micro switch is a stiff wire with a black "squared" knob that is mounted directly under the trigger.
The top cover on an S25 will have one screw right in the center, while the micro series will have two screws, one on each side.

The saws are completely different and have very few, if any, interchangeable parts.
The first little saw that I fixed up and gave to Sheila was a PP205 which is a micro variation.

It always tickles me to hear people say a 50 cc saw is to small to be a "general firewood" saw because I have known a couple of guys over the years that heated their house solely with wood and the only saw they had was a 38cc Poulan Micro!!!

Don't agree . Its clearly labelled as Micro S25CVA. I believe that its 2.3Ci and 38cc. Micros, at least early ones w/o the S were 2.0ci. I believe Brad's is a newer Micro series saw.

I would be surprised if its a Zama carb, but maybe. 3800 saws used the samw Walbro HDB 8 as the 3400 thru 4000's. Wonder if someone did a carb change on it.

yea the guy that i got it from done the carb change he's all for that japanese stuff but i'm not all for them at all. becuase every time i had one on a saw it messes up and i end up buyin a new carb for it

Nice little saw. I generally rip the ignition out of those models and throw the rest of the saw away.

Man, that's cold. :jester:

OhioGregg: Brad, Here are a couple pics of my S25CVA. They are 38cc (2.3ci.) with the on/off toggle switch on the case. The Micro version is 33cc (2.0ci.) I believe. Like Mike stated.

I have an identical saw. The fine print on the bottom of the recoil states
"MODEL NO. S25CVA-38CCM-SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA"
I also have two gray Craftsman, large w/CV and small w/ridgid handle. They both have the cheezy wire on/off switch. The large has toasted P&C and the small one has lots or radial play on the crank bearings. Small one pulls 150psi and runs but not well.

Anyone needing the large Craftsman (358.355061) for parts is welcome. I may break down and put bearings and seals in the small (358.355162). It seems lighter than the S25CVA.
