Not to muddy the waters but that is also the cylinder # for model 358.356081 which is a 3.0 c.i. that looks identical to the 3800 on the front of the user manual.

I agree but am also confused. How can a 3.0 saw use the same cylinder as a 3.4 saw, which I think the 080 series is or worse a 3800 as you state.

Just because Sears is listing the same cylinder as "replacement for" doesn't mean thats the same one that came on the saw. Consider that fact that when many of these are replaced, they are replaced in matching sets, P/C, and its easier for them to stock one rather than four or five, and many home owners couldn't tell the difference anyway.

What you're saying then is that an owner of a 3.0 or roughly 49cc saw could get a P&C that could increase cc's to 56 or 61, if it happened to be a 358.356080 P&C ?
Good deal!

Powder Coat color swatch

Howdy, color restoration using powder coating was brought up in the yellow thread and I thought I'd post some pics of a color we came up with mixing powder for the green saws. I know a lot of y'all are restoring for looks as well as performance and I want to put the best finish on my saws too. Here are a few pics of the green we came up with.
My 306 was mostly just wiped down. I haven't disassembled it to give it a good cleaning yet.

Not to mention the fact that Poulan over the years reportedly sold the same saw under several different sizes. Thus they would manufacture 12,000 or so 4000s and sell 6000 as 3400s, 4000 as 3700s and 2000 as 4000s for instance. (This is just an example and isn't factual in any shape or form)
Apparently they found out that it was cheaper to do that, than stock bunches of different parts and have to waste time changing assembly lines from one product to another.

Didn't mean to piss you off. :msp_biggrin:

I'm serious! :hmm3grin2orange:

I have an old S25DA that I have a gasket set for (yes it still needs seals) so I could pull it apart, prep case parts, mail them to you, they come back Poulan green and tough as nails!

Or something like that...

Thats interesting as to my knowlage there was never a 3.0 ci saw built on that platform. That IPL for the 358.356081 shows that as well as both the piston and cyl show 3400 parts.

Either that IPL that shows it as a 3.0 is a missprint or they were selling 3400 saws labeled as 3.0 saws.

Either way the saw in question is for sure a 3400.

Yes to a point but the IPL list the piston and cyl seperate not as a set.

I don't believe that they ever made a 3.0 saw on that chassis.

Yeah they are listed separate. I know what the repair center stocked as I worked in a Sears for a while, and knew a half dozen techs doing the repairs. They stocked 3.7's, and ordered the bigger one if they needed it. Otherwise, "best practice" was to install new piston and cylinder, adjust carb, placate customer.

The 3.7's were the big ones for that series that Sears sold but I know what you mean.

4900

Well here is the 4900, I mounted my 24" b/c and gave a 10min wipe up, looks pretty good, wish I can get more pics but the camera battery is shot and after one pic says replace battery. Just click on pic and then click it again for super size view. Anyway is the cylinder cover the right color?? Also this saw has a 5400 bowsaw clutch cover on it.

I am pretty sure that if you have seen a 5200 eating wood, then you have seen an 8500 doing the same thing. The motor is the same size. The handle bar and the fuel tank are the biggest differences that I have noticed. Perhaps Modified Mark or someone with experience with the Poulans could elaborate. I don't think there is enough of a difference to make any difference, except for the fact that the guy running the 5200 is going to have to stop a little more often for fuel mix.
Either one of these saws can work you to death. They just won't slow down.:hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange:

Yeah the ones I watched looked like fricken termites eating wood:laugh:

Funny you should ask that. I just mailed out a 4900 this week that was the traditional Poulan green but the top cover with it was the same color green as yours.
