Engineers are lothe to add unneeded parts. If it originally had a woodruff key you can bet it still needs it. The bean counters you know.

That is not a self locking taper on the flywheel fit.
yea, that. and why the hell wouldn't someone spend the spare change on the key?

hmmm

i really think the taper locks it down if you tork it down at least ive read that over and over... and like i said its a shelf queen if i decide to sell it on ebay or somthing i will put one in or i may when i get around to it.....

O.K. Guys!!!

What's the verdict???

Did I pay too much for a 3400 with 4000 parts on it, or did I get a pretty good buy on a 4000 with a 3400 decal on it?????
It was listed as a 3400 but I'm not so sure.

Well,

The verdict is in:msp_scared:

I guess ya win some and ya loose some.

This saw came today and it definitely has the 4000 top cover, and muffler.
But it also has the 3400 flywheel and recoil starter....the pulley of which was broken but it was still working just as it should.

I pulled the muffler and the p/c are VERY clean and the piston had THIN rings!!!
Got my calipers out and using the depth gauge, measured from the back of the cylinder to the front of the exhaust port............80mm.

Went out to the shop and pulled the muffler on one of my 3400s, measuring the same manner....................75.5!

I don't have a 3700 to measure so I Can't Be 100% certain but I feel real confident that this saw is indeed, a 4000!!!

It shows 155+ on my el cheapo compression tester, put a little fuel in it and less than 10 pulls later it kicked off and ran like a champ.
I figured fuel lines and a carb kit at a minimum but it looks like I may have gotten lucky.
I dressed the bar rails as they were in pretty sad shape and put the(Stihl in about 70%) chain on.

Looks like I may have come out alright on this one!

Mike, measured using your procedure on a 3700 cylinder and got 73.3mm and 72.6 for a 3400 cylinder. This was done using a digital micrometer. Looks like you got a 4000.

Way to go MIke! I was sure it had to be a 4000. I got one kinda like that on ebay once. It had no covers at all, was just a crank case, with piston cyl. Was listed as a 3400, but looking closely at the poor picture, I thought I noticed a 4000 style muffler and flywheel.

Took a chance and got it cheap. Thats the one I made my blue 4000 out of. And why it lacks the proper air cleaner setup. LOL Its getting harder to find that kind of unidentified for sure saws. To many smarter Poulan guys around now, than used to be..:D
