thanks fellas!

thank you. yes i saw it at bumper to bumber for like 6 bucks i think i will get that and give it a try ... thanks again.

Got a nice low hour Craftsman 3.4 in. It was a dirty greasy mess but it cleaned up well. It has a 150lbs compression dry.

Needs some fuel lines and TLC like the rusty muffler cleaned up. I think this will get a deflector style muffler mod.

This might be up for a rehomeing.

I turned down a slightly used 3.7 Craftsman for $35 at the flea market today. I'm kinda kicking myself now, considering what I bought instead.

You feeling allright? Do you need an intervention? No WAY would I would have turned down a local Craftsman 3.7 for $35. I like them red Poulans...:yoyo:

Any one have specs for the Fairbanks style starters?
Particularly the recoil springs!
How do you measure or what are the sizes.

For the project below.
Super 72
(the recoil is actually in good shape under all the AGE and debris!)

Never seen a recoil spring on a saw completely rot to hell like that before. I'll bet the innards from a Homelite FM starter would work just fine Matt. Pully, spring, dogs, etc. Talking C-5/7/9...

Edit:

Now I know why you were asking about that piston....:D

say what do ya all use when you dont use the gasket the moto seal stuff???? or any gasket maker? i did my first acid wash on a cylinder thought i would try it on that dayton i got .... i tried permatex seal a thread let it sit for 2 days got it to fire up blew that plug right out fast LOL so i thought i would try ya alls trick with the rings and the gasket removel will let ya know how it goes...

Sounds like I have a gameplan now. Swaperoo the rings and lose the base gasket, after I check the comp gauge of course...

I have had good luck with the moto seal on sled cases , others round here like the ultra grey , but it is to soft n flexible imo, like silicone.
I would go with the moto seal also.

Actually, I like them too, trouble is I have lots of saws that I can use, several Poulans, and I was mainly looking for a few saws to sell. Although the Poulans are great saws, I haven't had much luck at getting much money for them, tells you what the buyers know about chainsaws. I ended up buying a couple of Echos that were worse saws than the Poulan but were cheaper and somehow the average guy thinks they're worth more.
In a few days I'll tell you about a little "experiment" I ran on selling saws and what the results were.

I've seen them rot like that, old McCullochs do it all the time. I saw a McCulloch 300 yesterday that was rotted down. I noticed it when I couldn't pull the starter rope, it was stuck.

Furniture looks pretty clean , shes gonna stand out against all the green in the shop.

Another question regarding this 306, is there a new bar that will fit it ; seems the last owner jammed an oregon on it and squashed the chain adjustment pin a bit...couldn't even tighten the chain . I think this is why he sold it... whata knucklehead .
I could just modify it I guess

They use the same bars as the 3400/3700/4000, 375/395, 245, & 4200/5200.

Rehomeing huh??? I like those saws. I've got a deal worked out on a 2700 Poulan (I think).

OK, I felt so bad about what you said so I went out this morning and bought a slightly used 3400 Counter-Vibe Poulan. I'll post up a pic soon, probably today. I hope that puts me in better graces with all the Poulan guys. Added to collection below.

Poulan XXV, Poulan 25 Micro (3 at least), Dayton 2z463, Poulan Pro 380, Poulan 3500, Craftsman 2.1 (2)

Poulan 2300AV / Sears

I have 3 of these saws on the bench today. Trying to get one running (I think it needs a carburetor rebuild wt-83) and working on a carburetor tune on the other. The saw in the middle is a parts saw for the other two, one is my friends and the other is mine.

Also I am looking for the max RPM setting for this saw. Any Help?

Hey, Thats not bad looking at all. That right there is the only saw I had for 22 years. Had the 18" banana nose bar on it for about half its life, then switched to a 20". For those 22 years, I thought I was steppin in high cotton".

Now that I have more saws to choose from, and use. The 3400 just don't get any use any more. Kinda sad in a way.

Gregg,

I doubt if it will get much use here either..I do intend on seeing what's wrong with it (it was at a repair shop), I know one thing, it had a bunch of oil under it so it may just be oil leakage. I really don't mind saws that leak bar oil as long as I know they leak, I just drain them when I get done using them and I'll probably put this one in it's carrying case anyway. I'll probably go out tonight and put a little fuel down the carb and see if it will start. I'll probably check that oiler also.

nice job!

I bet I can guess why it was at the shop, and for sale. A customer brought it in cause he couldn't get it started, been sittin for some time. "fuel lines & carb most likely". The shop owner takes a look at it, and says... "An old Poulan...don't think ya can get parts for them anymore, you'd be better off just buyin a new saw":dizzy: Then there it sat, till somebody with at least half a brain comes along and saves it. LOL Not saying you have just half a brain!.Just a generalized statement.
