Thanks Al, That tractor is 1950 Ford 8N. Close though! LOL One of my grandfathers had a TO-20. I think the TO designation was for the American built Fergies. The European built ones were TE. If I remember right.

And, Yes..The Poulans will be getting worked hard in the next month or so. Plenty of opportunity to take pics. LOL
The leaves were falling heavily today. Especially when that big Ash came down through the canopy. :D

Gregg,

As John Anderson would say........"Wish I could'a been there for that"!!!
Sure would have been a lot more fun that getting this shot of Cortisone in my shoulder!:msp_angry:

Gregg,

Nice work and Nice saw Gregg! Ill be posting some saws at work pics soon too. The city took down 3 big Maple by my parents house and He intercepetes and had the guys unlod the truck right in the back yard.

Gregg, your 4200 is so pretty clean I am sorry to post this, but would you agree this is the worst example of extreme violence and neglect of a beautiful machine?

No matter what I do it will always be an ugly child. (Just as well the the bore and piston are pristine!)

Al.

Believe it or not, Al I think my 5200 was in worse shape than that!!! LOL I have never seen one with a chain brake, that can recall. That would be a tough item to find parts for, at least in the US. I have replaced all the covers on my 5200, and the rear handle & tank. Just havn't painted it yet.

I'll agree with that...100%. Yikes! To much chainsaw activity over the weekend Mike? Or too much work, at work.:msp_thumbdn:

Al.

You know what Al, that saw was used for it's intended perpose in life, to cut lots and lots of wood, and still be awsome on the inside.

Poulan really did know how to build a good saw in that time frame, I've worked on some that look like they'd been thrown through the limb shredder, and yet they run and cut and will fill your truck like any new saw, for about $700 less too.

You know Dave, I like it! I bought 2 like that, A 28" & 24". These have the replaceable sprocket nose. And to me, look like a dead ringer to the Oregon Power Match bars in quality. I have a 20" laminated Forester bar also. maybe not as nice, but have tons of use on it. Price on either is what I like best. :D

Fired my 3700 up for the first time. I've had this saw for almost a year, got it real cheap, was a basket case and missing parts galore. I would like to thank all those who helped with parts, or who offered parts. I must say Sears Parts Direct seems to have quite a bit of old Poulan parts hanging around the warehouses, and their resonable pricing and quick shipping too.

Anyway I needed just the clutch plate washer and sprocket washer, they had em and I got em today. I also got a brand new bucking spike from Randy on ebay. I also used an old carb gasket that seemed plyable enough to work. Keep in mind I did even know anything about the carb, sooo I gassed her, got her to idle, but, no high speed, part throttle OK, but wide open she'll stall. So I figured I need a kit, but I pulled the carb appart anyway. I seen what the problem was the main check valve screen was clogged solid, I happend to have a few extra, so I sprayed the carb with cleaner and blew it all out, reassembled, headed out to see again. It was evident right from the first pop, once I got it adjusted right she screams now. I also am using my 4000 muffler with a drilled diffuser on this saw because I did a 4200 style mod to another for the 4000, so she sounds sick. Just gotta pick up a bar and chain, this is running an old 16" bar and stock Poulan P72S chain. Thanks to all, very excited right now, have almost the entire line of mid weight Poulans, except for the 3800.

New score 3400

So stumbled into a pawn shop today, and left packing this beauty!!! SUPER SUPER low hour 3400 I think, Pawn shop removed stickers to try to get money saying they didn't know it was. They said Poulans are junk!! I paid more than I wanted because there prices are based on eBay values. Still havent cleaned it up. So pictures are of it dusty dirty.

Still has oem bar with 75% of its paint
No scratches except for the two bosses on the bottom, very very small one on handle bar.
original spark plug
no rust on muffler
Fires up runs GREAT, no scoring
Anyone have a guess on hours????? I think this MAY (using that lightly) be the cleanest 3400 I have ever touched.

That 3400 looks plum wore out. Time to pass it on to some poor sod like me so I can use it for parts. I figure I could get $5.00 or maybe $10.00 worth of old parts from her; what say I give you $12.00 to take it off your hands and you pay shipping. Can't be fairer than that.:msp_wink:

Great find!

Good job Dave. I have also had good luck with sears parts direct.

Nice saw, Id say it has around 15 tanks through it. You would think the pawn shop would clean it up before selling it. Too bad those dumba$$es took the decals off. Judging from the muffler and green/black you have a later model saw.

Nice find :msp_thumbup: I wouldn't have a guess as to the hours. I'm not sure the last year they made the 3400, but its got features that I would equate to a very late model. First, the green & black color scheme. The hand guard mounted to the top cover. Later style muffler. The plastic clutch cover, most 3400's, had magnesium clutch covers. Just a bunch of stuff says late model to me. Probably the same vintage as the 3800. Nice saw, and should clean up great!!!

Another thing I noticed was the chain. Picture is a little fuzzy, but the chain looks odd to me.

Gregg,

Thanks, you are correct it is a late model one, year on the filter cover says underside says "94". I can find very little difference from new to early models besides clutch cover and muffler.
If the saw was sold out here in Wa. new, the dealer most likely swapped the Skip chain onto it, They all do out here, and have for years.
I haven't even cleaned it yet, todays project, I sourced oem decals too already but haven't decided what I'm going to do with this yet, its made to be used, but I think this one may need to go too someone who will not use it that much being thats it's still all OEM. don't know yet. I have two more coming in the mail but there fixers.

that's a beaut

Looks like a pret new saw, good score!

Yep, I am hoping people keep considering any poulan junk around here, so I can occasionally find another good one.

I hate to burst your bubble but I'M willing to bet money that is a 3800 instead of a 3400, have to measure the bore to be sure.

3400 or 3800???

I hate to burst your bubble but I'M willing to bet money that is a 3800 instead of a 3400, have to measure the bore to be sure.

That thought has been running through my head all day, Just kinda hoping for a 3800 but????? I did pull the muffler and took a peek, but decided not to measure yet, I can't have a low hour 3800 I'm not that lucky lately. I do have the Poulan Part# from the sticker on it!!!!
I good with either model, a 3800 would just be all that much better.
Maybe I peek at it again in the morning, I gave it a bath today, has few more scratches but all in all "good"

WELL my Pawn Shop "Junk" Poulan 3400 turned into a 3800

Couldn't take it anymore I had to measure the bore on this nice countervibe, Came out at 1.875 inches (47.4mm) and that makes it a 3800 thick ring!!! I'm just So Happy I could just s***. My beauty pawn shop score just turned into a Gem!!! its not a 4000 but oh well I think I'll live.

Lets see If I can get some pics of it cleaned up, has few more scuffs now thats shes cleaned up, and I found my stash of NOS Poulan/Oregan 70DL Low Kickback chain for it too, from 1994 (not my choice but I have it and goes to it)
Now what to do with it??????? I guess I'll get the decals for it as its worthy of them. (pawn shop junk Poulan)
