71-A troubles.

You guys at the GTG know I wasnt happy with the 71-A and the way it was running.

I tore into it today, checked IGN first all was good there. I just did this carb when I got it but got to checking it and low and behold it was leaking gas from the throat...

Tore into it and I think the rubber seal in the needle seat was not sealing right. Must have been some effects of that ethonal fuel that was in it last year. I went ahead and rebuilt the carb again....

Now the real trouble is that the recoil was kinda sticking some so I tore it apart to put a new rope in and found the recoil pulley was broken where the spring hooks into it...

So the search begins for a new recoil pulley so I can see if I fixed the carb or not. :ices_rofl:

I don't envy you at all, my friend.:( There is one thing I have learned, is I much prefer to work on the Thousand series saws...LOL I suppose all those old sand cast Poulans that use a FM starter are all different, so ya can't just use one from another model parts saw. Be a little easier if the were all interchangeable. I wish you luck with that beast!!

Gregg,

Poulan Pro 655/Pioneer P62 tank divider.

So, what is the goo or glue of choice to put the aluminum blank back in between the oil tank and the fuel tank?

Jb weld or some other two part epoxy?

I am disapointed in Yamabond as I just used it to seal a Homie C5 tank and it got soft when exposed to the fuel. Not a soft as your average silicon gasket maker but softer than I wanted.

I did one last year and used JB ya need to get it really clean I used spray carb cleaner. Slather both sided of the aluminum plate edges with JB after you have it in place smooth it with your finger on the gas side so you have a nice thick bead (you don't need to split the case to do this). By the way I have a 655 cylinder if anyone needs one, not perfect but descent.

Gregg,

Actually Gregg, most of that F/M starter stuff will interchange. Judging from the Poulan starter IPL the pulley fits a ton of them.

I'll find one!

I tried to tell ya!!!

Looks like the part# for my 54 starter assembly is the same as your 71A. You can borrow mine to check your saw till you find a replacement.

Chris B.

Thanks Chris, I am curious to hear this run again, I blocked off the governor for one thing, as I was tired of dealing with that for tuning but then again if the needle was leaking that just made it worse...

I also changed that 404x8 sprocket back to a 7 tooth as I just think it will work better that way.

I'm not sure what a 8 tooth is good for, maybe a gear drive. :msp_wink: Maybe I need to find a Super 72 just to put this nice plate bow on. :D

Mark:

What I'd like to find is the rubbery, stretchy stuff I've dug off some fuel tanks. There was a bunch in the inside of this C5 tank that a sharp steak knief wouldn't hardly touch. I've also found it on the fuel line entrance hole in Homie carb. box to seal out the wood dust.

I'm thinking the stuff is the old 3M weatherstrip adheasive. Looks like yellow snot.

Carl.

Nice "Junk" Poulan Partner there

I found this 325 Pro in a pile this Saturday when I went to pick up a couple of other saws, this one is the early version with closed transfers and windowed piston. Looks to have only been driven to the woods by a little old lady on Sundays. Runs good but I don't have a bar for it so have not seen what it will do.

Carl, do what you want, but you should go over to the Pioneer thread and ask them fine fellas what they reccomend. I'm sure they have been through this before.

Took 3 more Ash trees down today. Used the 4000 this time. Took a break and decided to take the camera back for the last one. Tree is not as big, but its still wood. LOL Even tried to set up for video. Still havn't figured out best place for it, when ya don't have a camera operator.. This 4000 I have been using a lot this year. It has my ModifiedMark muffler on it. Here are a few pics. If I can figure the video thing out, will post those also.

Gregg,

I traded for a pair of Craftsman 5.2's this spring at a GTG. In the deal I was to recieve an original advertisement, manual, and nos air filters. Well at my GTG the rest was exchanged. Just finished scanning the Manual/IPL if any one is interested shout.

Here is the original ad out of a Sears catalog.

Good Job Gregg, that 4000 just hums along.

I like how you got all fixed up for the AS PPE police. Got the chaps, the helmet, the ear protection and all that.

I just hope they dont look at your feet. :ices_rofl::ices_rofl:

LOL, I thought I had the PPE Police covered by wearing that stuff. Guess my white sneakers stand out to much with the black chaps.:) Good thing they didn't see my Milwaukee champagne too.:dizzy:

Yes..A Poulan guy, even wears Poulan chaps...!!!:msp_wink:
