Gregg,

Well guys I made it home with the 245A. I know that without pics it never happened so here it is, just as I got it.

It runs, but not well, ignition issues, but it seems to have very good compression. I'm missing the rear handle brace, and the air box knob. It appears complete except for those pieces.

I'll be tearing it down for seals, lines, and a good cleaning.

I know of several that aren't in that picture!
NO S25's at all and where is your frankensaw?

Mike

Unfortunately Mike, Most of those just sit and collect dust.:msp_ohmy: There seems to be certain ones that seem to get used more..lol A 4000 is my usual first in the trailer, and a 3700 as back up.Then one of the bigger saws, depending on the size tree I'm gonna be dealing with.

I'll bet that cleans up real good!! Randy. I'll take a look and see if I might have the parts your needing. I had 245 parts saw, and a 306, which a lot of parts interchange with.

Gregg,

Thanks for looking Greg. After seeing and running some of Mark's Poulans at GTGs I've made a decision to collect certain saws from a few manufacturers, this is one of the saws on my list. :)

Anything to pay careful attention to when I tear it down?

I have part of one here as well. I'll see what I have

Glad you're getting into the old Poulans Randy. A word to the wise though...............be careful about saying things like what's in the quote above. The OTF goons will never let you live it down....:jester:

I have a certain kinship with the OTF goons, and can handle those Yahoos. :D

I gave the my 3400 a quick lookover, & was surprised not to see an exhaust outlet. Does the exhaust exit through the holes in the back of the muffler? There doesn't appear to be much room between the back of the muffler and the heat shield.

You got it!!!! out back and around the corners!!!! So mod away, real helps with a nice hole or holes over the bar like most saws. Horrible design but worked for years. IMO Baffle inside further limits stuff

First thing to do is to enlarge the baffle holes. You can go as large as you want or until you infringe into the other holes. Second , I remove the spark arrestor screen, but that's just me, and I don't have to worry about cutting on Federal land. Lastly I drill two or three holes in the lower part of the muffler. I try to keep their total size less than 90% of the cylinder exhaust opening. Other guys create a slotted opening in the side of the muffler and create a side exhaust, similar to a 4000 muffler.

Thanks for the 3400 responses. I was thinking some holes drilled in the 'bend' on each side of the muffler might work well.

I also gave my Skilsaw 1616 Deluxe Type III (with rare chainbrake) a quick lookover, & noticed a very strange exhaust exit system. That will be soon be a thread with photos in the main chainsaw forum.

245a

I have a Poulan 245A that i would like to sell. It runs but can be temperamental. Also, starter rope wont rewind fully. Don't know what it's worth. New Oregon bar and chain.

I tell ya what it is worth, it is worth *keeping* and cutting wood with it. Excellent saw. Go price an equivalent modern day 74cc saw. You'll see a little work and parts will make it worth while to keep, if you have needs of a chainsaw that is capable of cutting serious wood.

You can get it fixed, sounds like you have possibly just minor issues. Heaps and tons of knowledge on this poulan thread here already, and all the guys are willing to help. Starter pulley sounds like it just needs cleaning, running issues, clean the carb, possibly a carb kit install, put new fuel lines and filter, etc.

Don't be intimidated, a year ago when I joined I had never done a thing to a chainsaw other than run a round file on the chain and keep the air cleaner clean, that's it. Now...still not an expert but I would have no probs tackling just about any saw out there. Not saying I could fix every single problem, but I'd give it a shot if I had to.

Thanks Zogger. I've taken the pully apart, cleaned the rope and cover plate, re-wound the spring. Have done this 3 times and it still won't fully retract. With the running issues, i thought I had the mixture right a month ago nut when i tried to use it over the weekend, it would idle but not run under 1/2 or full throttle, in or out of wood. I put a new fuel filter and fuel line on it. Agree that it's impossible to find that displacement nowdays but if the saw gives me trouble every time i use it, and we just had a nasty snow/ice storm up here in CT where i needed it fast, it's not worth the stress. I appreciate you taking the time to respond though.
