Craftsman 358.356101 on the way

I have a craftsman coming, hope it will be here soon. I'm going to replace the fuel lines and filter, and vent when it gets here. My question should I put a carb kit in it or what to see how it runs? The owner stated that it runs good now.

How often do you replace the clutch sprocket on your saws? I read on Oregons web site they should be replaced after 2 chains.

Thanks for helping Scott

So I just love the Poulan 4200 mufflers what a work of art!!!!! Think its one of the best designed, Partner p100 are ok do to dual configuration but restrictive, but these are OPEN, easy work on, tough, and have a SEWER PIPE outlet! that is a real pipe extending inward 2",
THEY JUST LOOK COOL!!! theres too many ways to mod it but I see very little reason to touch it, maybe enlarge baffle tube holes?
Again a WORK OF ART

I agree with that!!! I drilled out the baffle holes slightly on my 5200, but just left the one on my 4200 alone. Just seems they are pretty free flowing as they are. I do ditch the spark screens though..:msp_wink:

Gregg,

not a saw but i'm gonna ask anyway. working on a PL 25 poulan weedwacker for my SIL. rebuilt the carb, cleaned it out in a USC, blew it out with carb cleaner, blew it out with compressed air, reassembled with new gaskets, diaphrams, screen, and needle valve. i finally got it to start by putting mix in the carb throat. got the single mixture screw (man i hate those single screw carbs) dialed in per standard fast-slow-fast-avg technique (forget about the 1 to 1-1/2 turns out; this ones 3 turns out). problem is i can only get it started by shooting mix in the carb. the prime bulb is new, hoses are new, and i can see mix in the lines going to and exiting the carb when i'm bulb priming it. there is some scoring but not enough to not run. don't have a compression tester so can't say much about compression. i'd like to get this thing out of my shop. anyone got any suggestions; other than toss it? thanks, jerry

originally started a new thread on this and got no responses so thought i'd try on the poulan thread. so far, no responses. anybody got anything on this? got a walbro WA-226. top of metering lever is aligned with the circuit plate. only thing i didn't do was the welch plug.

Thats something I do with every saw I come across. Change the fuel lines & carb kit, just because you never really know when it was done last, or if ever.

As far as sprockets go. I would just change them when YOU think they should be changed. Just check how they are wearing and decide. Oregon is in the business of selling sprockets & chains remember.;) But, I will say. Most of the saws I have acquired had what amounts to no sprocket left on them...LOL:msp_scared: Thats the same reason I change fuel lines & carb kits also.

Gregg,

Good to hear Mark. So was it the governor that was giving him fits? I assume this is a Tillotson carb? I always block those off as well.

I don't speak for Mark, but I suspect those clutch springs had a lot to do with Nik's problems. They were extremely weak. If he was trying to tune the lo side and idle speed to stop the chain from turning, he would have ended up with one jacked up carburetor.

Yesterday I decided to clean-up my 3.7/3700. When I was reinstalling the b&c, I noticed that the engine while turning when I was checking the chain tension. I gave the clutch a look, and yes the shoes are touching the drum. This' the first time that I've ran into this. I haven't yet removed the clutch.

I also noticed some light scoring on the intake side of the jug; looks like this saw will be up for a tear-down.

Any thoughts? Do I have to include photos to get some responses :msp_rolleyes: ?

Mark, I have a Wright 136/Poulan 361 that is way down on my list of projects. If you're interested, shoot me a PM.

I'll respond a little...The only way I could get my yard sale Poulan Pro to run was to change the carburetor to a non-weedeater, non primer bulb carburetor, something like is on a Poulan 2000 chainsaw. I used a Homelite duckbill valve to vent the gas tank and closed off the vent in the gas cap because it leaked like crazy and all the other gas caps I tried leaked also. Now it starts easily, runs great and doesn't leak. And no, I didn't turn the screws 3 turns out, 1 1/2 turns if I remember from 2 years ago.

YES, Chris, You always have to include PICS!! LOL This is the only pic I could find of one of mine. They are clearly NOT touching. But there isn't a whole lot of clearance either. Don't believe I ever heard of any either. If they are touching, maybe a good cleaning with it apart will help? Does the chain spin while idling? There is no adjustment you can make that I'm aware of. If after doing that, I guess a replacement would be in order. The whole shebang, or the springs by themselves.

thanks for response. does anyone have a cross-reference as to what walbro carbs can be swapped?

Hopefully there will be a link to my Craftsman Poulan 3700 album on Photobucket. Pics 9, 10, & 11 aren't great, but they show the shoes touching the drum.

FYI/FWIW--Photobucket wouldn't accept 3.7 in the album title because . isn't alphnumeric :msp_thumbdn:.

Chris, Maybe somebody else can chime in, but it all most looks like the clutch shoes might be in backwards. I'd have to take it apart and look at it closer. Here is your pic and mine next to each other.

Gregg,

After looking at the clutch on your 3700 further. I am 100% sure somebody put the clutch together wrong.:msp_ohmy:
The springs should be underneath the shoes. Not on the outside. Its not a difficult job to fix. LOL You see something new every day I guess.

Gregg,

Gregg, thanks for the info (maybe if I had spent some time checking the IPL :msp_tongue:).

That's the saw I got via eBay (thread here on AS). I arranged to pick it up locally, & the guy selling it was a friend I hadn't seen since '78/'79. I know for a fact he's been working on small engines since he was old enought to hold a wrench.

Gregg,

Yep!!!

That clutch is absolutely on backwards!

Craftsman 358.350460

Does anyone know the Poulan model for 358.350460 ?

Thanks,

Brian

A quick google search shows that to be one of the "Wildthing" derivatives.
Specifically that appears to be a Poulan 42cc with a 16" bar.

Mike

There is a pseudo IPL on the Sears website but it says 32cc. I don't like the IPL because it has find numbers but no part numbers in a list like a normal one.

Buying parts

So I take this week off to cut wood, Monday was great Tues.rain, today snowing and rain. I go into town and pick up a couple of chains my wife dropped off Tues. to have sharpened. So I figured I would pick up the fuel hose and duckbill vent and filter that Mark has listed for my Craftsman that I have coming. So the guy asks what the hose and vent are for and I tell him I have the size. He says we haven't had any poulan parts since Poulan got bought out by some Chinese Company and the same thing about the Homelight vent. I realize I'm not buying a saw from them but I am trying to buy local instead of online. I've been working in the parts dept. at a GM dealership for 28 years, and if someone says they need a 3/8 fuel hose I don't care what its for I sell it to them.

So do you guys buy mostly online or should I try and find a small shop that doesn't have a brand logo out front ?
Thanks Scott
