Thanks for all the tuning advice guys. I think I may have discovered what is causing the stalling problems I described. I took another look at the new fuel lines I installed and found they were 3/32" inside diameter, not the 1/8" that is recommended. The line also makes a sharp bend over a part of the frame on its way to the carb and was partially collapsed at that point. The shop where I purchased the fuel line only has the 3/32" line in stock so I ordered some 1/8" inside diameter online. When I get the new line installed and a little longer length so it doesn't pinch I'll try tuning it up again using your advice.

Thanks

The id is much less an issue than the crimping of the line. Thats
likely the culprit. Make sure its free behind the carb.

And the saw has a sticker on it that says 36cc...this is starting to sound like the wild thing conversation. 32cc, 36cc, 42cc...the world may never know.

If it's an older model, 36cc is possible. In that series of saws, they only made 36 and 42cc versions regardless of what the recoil sticker says. The little info tag on the rear handle of the saw usually tells the engine family and CCs. Up till I'm guessing about 2000, 36 and 42cc were available, after that they were all 42cc, from the 1950- all the way up to the 2550.

Even the newer models saws, 3314, 3516, 3816, 4018, 4218, there all 42cc.

4900 trouble

I rebuilt the carb and blocked off the governor valve. The saw starts easily now, and revs up nicely, however at high rpm she revs up even further then kinda chokes out now, like outta fuel, no matter how open I make the H screw. Anyway after 2.5 turns out she bogs on rev up anyway. Could I need to raise the needle lever???? Is the carb running out of fuel??

I couldn't tell ya when the Marines were born, off the top of my head. I was never a Marine. But Ike was president when I was born, and I know they were around a lot longer than that. LOL

3314

Got a cutting report on my 3314. Finally got to get it into some wood. My opinion, she seems a bit low in torque, it's a smooth running saw with the exhaust mods and carb adjust and makes a ton of rpm, but push it hard and she stalls the chain fairly easily. My Micro that I built with the S23 engine killed it in the power and speed department, and it's only 38cc compared to 42cc.

Yes Sir!

That certainly sounds like a fuel starvation issue.
My Husky 350 would do that out of the cut after I ported it.
Found out that it was a tank vent.

After spending some time putting my 2.0 Craftsman together I slowly but finally figured out what was wrong with it, very low compression, even though it felt ok by pulling the rope. Yeah, I finally broke down and bought a compression gauge. So now the saw sits while I order a new piston ring for it. Cylinder and piston weren't scarred a bit but I think the ring might be stuck or broken. I'm assuming that affects the chain oiler as well because it didn't seem to work too good either.

With these saws if the compression is low but no scoring, get out your dial calipers and measure the bore wear and compare it with your piston. I've had quite a few like that and rings helped only a tad, end result was the cylinder was just worn out. I have one right now on the bench, low compression, I do have a mint cylinder for it though. The 2.0 cylinders are all NLA, Chainsawr has a few of them in stock last I checked though.

LOL, Thanks Nik. I actually didn't even think about it till seeing your post.:msp_scared: Yep, the old fart made it another year. Guess I'll have to go out and run a Poulan and celebrate.:D Something I do most days anyway, lol And, its not raining today!

Gregg,

Happy birthday buddy! :bday: Hope it was a good one and good luck follows ya.

Not raining much here today either but I made a detour to Beecher Ill on the way home tonight to look at a new tractor and while I was in there it snowed hard enough to have to brush it off the windshield of the car when I left! :bang:

Half way back to home in IN, it was never there at all.

I agree 110% with that.

How did it run before the carb job? You got a fuel problem somewhere, that needle shouldnt be much more then a turn out. Fuel filter?

Happy birthday Gregg and thanks for all the advice.

Does anyone know where to get the paint for a gray Poulan? I found another one.

Dave76 you talked about blocking off the governor valve, how do you go about doing it if I ma ask.

Thanks Scott

It ran ok, couldn't get it to idle very good, ran ok on high rpm, but the governor was still hooked up so it would run rich at high revs. But the real problem was the fuel would siphon out of the tank when sitting a few days and fill the crankcase and I could even pull er over, had to stand it on the bar and drain it outta the muffler, figured the needle was sticking open, so I got an HS repair kit, cleaned it up and reassembled.

The fuel filter is an old Walbro that fit the 1/8 inch line, it looked in good shape so I didn't change it, mabe I should of.

Should I hook the governor valve back up???

Depends on what method you used to disable the governor. If your sure its blocked off properly then no, leave it blocked.

I had a saw just the other day with one of the newer Poulan white plastic filters that wouldnt start at all till I changed the fuel filter. The filter looked good too.

I think I would start there myself. What kit did you use, RK-23HS? Thats what it needed. Inlet needle lever is flush with the carb body correct? No kink in the fuel line where it bends coming out of the tank?

Let us know what you find.
