Yeah, the top cover is an extra I had. I figure I can get it going and then keep on scrounging. I have yet to see a 4000 top cover for sale. I have a clutch cover for each, but not the proper one. I bought them to cut wood so function over form! One part I'm low on is the chain guide plates. I need 3 sets so I'm trying to find a deal . I may just make them.

Since this is the poulan thread... Are any of the newer box store 33cc -45cc or so saws any good? I know all the new stuff is crap, but any model # that stands out for limbing? I hate the auto adjusters and goofball helpers added to new saws. I'm a wuss and need something lighter than the 3800.

The newer stuff almost all has the toolless adjusters. If it has AVX at the end of the model# then it is toolless. Usually it can be replaced by the "old school" system by just replacing it with the AV model clutch cover and using bar nuts. I have a PP4620AVX which is pretty much a(i believe) a 2750 or a 295. I muffler modded it and it runs pretty darn good. It has a 20" bar, which is probably a little big for serious cutting, but I've cut down some 18" DBH trees and use it around my 4 acre wooded homestead. If you put a 16-18" bar on it with a good chain, you probably wouldn't be disappointed with it......however I don't know for certain. Mine treats me very well and my in-laws who have tried it(Stihl Junkies) have been thoroughly impressed too. It might not be as durable as a pro saw, and it definitely isn't a 70cc saw, but if it isn't used all day every day, then it will probably serve you well. It also costs a lot less than many other saws, which can be good or bad. It is good in the fact that if you do screw up and drop a tree on it, you aren't out $600, and if you are happy with it, then you are $400 richer also.

The local farm store has a new model listed, a PP5020AV, which is a 50cc saw, 20" bar, and a traditional chain adjustment system. It is on sale through 11/20 also.

I saw that 20" when I was looking for a larger saw a few weeks ago. I have 3 heavyish saws... actually I have a few other saws including a shindaiwa 488 and a 352. I'm looking for something I can cut 4"-6" limbs all day and barely know I'm carrying it around. I just grabbed a couple old Homelites we had laying around that were "retired" after the shinny purchases a bunch of years ago. I may give the best looking one of them a crack and see if I can Frankenstein one together. The 352 is perfect, but my Grandfather uses it a lot because of the easy start. I was kicking around a 360 as I just bought one of them for my Dad on fleabay for a great deal.

Thanks for the info on the avx suffix. That's very helpful!

Another option in the 42cc class is a WildThing. OPen up the muffler and it runs pretty good. Can be had cheap as well. If you're looking used look for a 2375 WildThing.

Or, you could do like me and buy some S25's. They are pretty cheap. Put a 12-14" bar on it with a good chain, and the 38cc's will rip.

Nick

My Dad has a super xxv and I just bought my little brother (not really little at 6' 1") the 40cc wild thing for 20 bucks with an extra new chain and case ;)

What's the differences between the 4218 Wildthing and the regular 4218? And what's the difference between the Poulan and Poulan Pro 4218s?

Don't forget the Micros for a really light limber.
The 2300 series is a really strong little saw!

Mike

Mike,
I like those Micros for limbing too. I have a few and they really surprise with their willingness. I have 335XPT and a 019T but my 38cc Micros have it all over them. A bit more agricultural but dependable as can be.

And Mike, guess what? Some kind dude sent me some oil caps for my 8500. Thanks!!!

dayton 21

Hello,
I tried the seach for a Dayton 21, to find out what type of Poulan this might be or if it is by it self. There is one listed localy by me and was woundering if it was worth a look at it. I'm still trying to keep all these models straight.

Thanks Scott

Just got my 2.8 back from the shop where it got a loop of new Oregon chain. I had this 15" windsor bar kicking around and it found its home here. Its a .325 bar and I didnt have a lit of options for it. It cut very good with the 18" and should be a hot rod with this setup.
While I was there I got another Micro and a nice craftsman case. The saw has a 10" bar and safety chain. I already took it off since it will be perfect for the next project my dad is doing. He is demo-ing my grandmothers crushed carport. The 10'' bar and saftey chain is gonna go on his S25, the short bar will be better for this situation.

All but the body parts should be just regular micro parts.

Mark, the body parts are what concerns me. According to the description, it sounds as though some of the AV parts might be shot, but I won't know until I have the saw in hand. I've downloaded an IPL for a Poulan 2400 which appears to be what the Craftsman is, & also the Craftsman IPL for that model.

The downside is I don't many listings for 2400s or the re-badged Craftsman; top-handle 38cc/2.3 saw are common, but not the the rear-handle versions. Chances are the parts are common to other Poulan models, I'll do my homework once I give the saw a going over.

I wish that I had the spare money, seems like a very good price given the condition of the saw.

Poulan 3800 Countervibe Chainsaw VERY NICE LOW HOUR | eBay

It's kinda nice if you want one to look at. The price would be too high (for me, anyway) if you're wanting one to use. I found this little beauty of about 1/10 that price but I had to give it a bath and put a new fuel line and air filter on it. The previous owner said it ran lousy...most saws would with the fuel line rotted off and in three or four pieces!
