Another alternative, is to just buy another PARTS saw. If you can find one cheap. Can be another source for additional parts if ya need them.

Gregg,

Agree.

I'm knew to these Poulan's but just picked up a 3400 and need the 3" rear screw for the recoil cover. Where is a good place to source the small odds and ends from?

Thanks,

Saw a set of those screws on eBay a couple days ago.

Low Hour 3400, One owner saw

Picked this up off eBay, from original owner who bought it new back in 1982. Came complete with tool and owners manual. Very light use, guy said it just sat on shop floor, he started it yearly. Also has OEM 18" Poulan bar and "The OEM POULAN CHAIN" says Poulan on every link!!!
Came with everything pictured and both 20" chains are new, Oregan bar is like new.

Not sure if I'm keeping it yet, just no room and too many projects. Runs looks great. Owner ran 16:1 in it since new. Never ran more than a few minutes. He replaced air filters rather than clean them! Came with spare bought from Jacks back in 2002.

Not even cleaned yet. Sorry for poor pics, There was Ice fog in the air!!

Saw looks in great shape. Good purchase.

Thanks for the part number. I guess that part of the fun of the old iron. The search. Saw does run good though.

Looks nice. My problem with the spray gun technique is I waste so much paint as I don't know how much to mix when painting a small item like a saw. Also will the paint keep in the gun long enough before applying a second coat? I've wasted a lot of Lime green paint. Bob

I picked this up many years ago. I haven't seen them in awhile but they might be still available. I've used this one twice and cleaned it up very good after use. Just fill it up with your air compressor. Works great for small projects and touch ups. I got it at Harbor Fright.

I mentioned in an earlier post, I found sublime green paint in a quart can on the shelf at Advanced Auto Parts, if you have one near you. Also, Federated Auto Parts will mix any color and put it in a spray can but its to costly for my taste to do so.

In my opinion, even dealing with the relatively small displacement of these engines, reducing chamber volume by reducing gasket thickness will not have any real effect on travel past the ports. Where you encounter the performance difference is by increasing compression.

But that's my opinion.

Nick

the increase in travel past the ports causes the increased compression due to the piston being closer to the top of the jug at TDC (decreased volume, just like you say)... i'm not sure how much of an increase in performance there is, or if it is only a theoretical discussion anyhow. someone would have to run the #s.

Finally Got to Try My Poulan 4000 in Some Wood

I finally got a chance to get out and cut some wood with the $20.00 Craigslist Poulan 4000 today. It cuts great. The wood was Cottonwood about 22 inches diameter. I was very pleased with how it cuts. I have new rings for it I have not installed yet, I'm not sure it needs them just yet.

Here'e a video of both my Stihl 029 and the Poulan 4000. Skip to 3:03 to see the 4000: http://youtu.be/fsH6FAtiwo8

--that is quite the 20 buck saw you have there!

Thanks. I ran an add on Craigslist asking for old chainsaws running or not and a guy replied with this one. I asked him how much he wanted for it and he said 20 bucks so I took it. At the time I didn't know anything about the saw. I only realized what I had when I started researching on this site. I did a carb kit, new fuel lines and filter, new spark plug, and drilled larger holes in the baffle inside the muffler. I haven't done anything with the muffler outlet yet, but I plan to soon.

There is an outlet on the right side of the muffler. At least there should be unless someone replaced the muffler. Suppose you could enlarge it a bit.

Those both run real well! Even that funny orange looking thing. What size bar are you running on your 4000? Looks to be at least 24". Thats the biggest bar I have tried yet on a 4000. They will handle 20" or 24" equally well. Now you know why I like them so much. I have 4 of them..:msp_ohmy: LOL

For $20 I would buy one every day of the week, or at least one, if I could ever find such a deal.

I see they are available on ebay. How well do they work with paint??? is the big question. Something tells me it would be hard to control how much paint your putting out of the nozzle. Don't know just how they operate, but its a interesting idea, though not exactly cheap. One add I seen said they weren't ment for paint. Another said yes to paint. LOL I'd be afraid they would be a one shot deal, but who knows.

Gregg,

Those things used to be readily available, Gregg, as Cajun HB mentioned they were available at Harbor Freight and the Home Depot here had them. They were made for paint, but all of a sudden no one seem to have them anymore. :msp_confused: AFAIK they work off air pressure that you supply from your compressor. I'd like to give one a try.

Gregg,

I'm not interested in those at all. If you have to go through all the trouble of cleaning them up with thinner and all that, might as well just use a small touch up spray gun. You can control the pattern and paint output with the spray gun........

Good point! Thanks for reminding me...I already have one of those. :msp_rolleyes:
