Some of the colleges have gone to the dogs in the last few years,As Iain has said they have to succesful to survive.
At work we have an Ex forces lad(38) & he is learning to climb & i am helping him as much as possible, where as we have a 24 yr old whos been doing tree work for 2 years & he still cant ID trees & he has to be told what to do all the time & i cant be bothered to help as every time you tell him or show him something he replies "I know that" even if he dont which gets up my nose.

bloody hell,2 years and no tree id ,not even the usual suspects? the lad wants putting at the business end of a chipper for 8 hours until he learns some manners or improves his attitude, really gets my piss boiling people like that,

Ross if he doesn't want the help screw him, if the ex forces guy wants and needs the help then do what you can, alteratively 'chill n kick back' for an extra few minutes

Iain,he says he wants my help but i think im just flogging a dead horse.
The boss has all the sites we cut by the hour so when i survyed the zone i was told to hour it for 2 men & add a bit for breakdowns etc,so a 2 man team will cut a 8 hrs per day,Now the boss wants me,the ex forces guy(who is a grafter) & the other 1 to do at least 12hrs work per day because we have a 3rd person, but we have to carry him most of the time which is a pain in the ar$e.

if your gaffer trusts your word then tell him it 'like it is' quietly confidentially
explain that he might as well set light to his money instead of giving the nugget it ,as it just as big a waste !!!! gaffers dont like throwing money away

he can always come out of the office and watch the man in action (or not as the case would seem)
suggest a friendly tree id competition that may shine some light in the bosses face

Thats just it,We have told him & he has even had words with the person in question but he makes him money as he charges an amount per man per day if you get my drift.
The lad is fine feeding a chipper but not much else.

well i can only presume that your wage packet and that of the other fella are different enough for yuor boss to accept his lack of ability ' brash monkey '

you cant have a gang of all eager climbers it just don't work sooner or later there be an almighty kick off someone has to do the grunt work
n it a ways looks better when your comfy up in the tree watching them

Im the main climber so im laughing,Usually once out the tree im dragging brash with the rest of them, none of the team are the type who says" im a climber & thats all i do" we all muck in to get the jobs done.Thats including Hawthorn hedges.

thats how it should be however a three man ground team should not leave much for you to clear up once the climb is over , especially if you dont make a crows nest for them to sort out

god i hate hawthorn

Sounds like you guys have it rough for good help, with the exception of the ex-forces man, good for him. Now myself and another certified utility arborist along with two groundsman are doing a big hazard tree removal job for the utility. A High Ranger o/c boom truck, a chip truck and a self feed chipper. Lots of scummy overhang on the three-phase, we bucket what we can and climb the rest. Most of it is cut to fire wood, some branches are mulched in forested lots and some are chipped. We are beating the estimated hours on almost every site, why? Good crew of hard workers that get along. Get rid of the mutts and invest your time in people that have a good attitude and are willing to learn and challenge themselves. As they get better, give them more responsibility and money. As long as the man has the physical ability, his attitude is everthing, that decides whether he will ever become a good tree worker or should be flipping burgers or pumping gas. Can't emphasize that enough, good luck.
