I hope I'm not killing you guys with this newbie stuff. You gotta start somewhere I guess. Hopefully I'll catch on soon.

NOT AT ALL - most of AS is newbies - they just don't say much! Keep posting.

Looks like a great project you got your hands on! Congrats to you.

Keep the posts coming!

Okay I'm embarressed to be doing this but I gotta. I really want to learn how to rebuild and fix a saw. But I have no idea where to start. I took apart and put together a motorcycle 20 years ago, and PM my boat and tractor but, have have no real motor experience. Should I just buy a saw and dive in, read a book, with 3 small kids I don't have any time to hang out with guys who could show me how. I would be doing it late at night like now. I'm thinking maybe I would buy a manual and look at that for a while. Sorry for being such a noob. I never really cared before I started hanging out at this site.:bang:

How's a noob got four green dots?

Cool. No jab, just asking.:)

No jab taken. I've been posting pretty regular for a few months and have made some friends. The rep thing is just a little extra fun. If someone makes you laugh or you strongly agree. A little pat on the back from your friends I guess.

No No I am not complaining. Just asking if he really was a noob because he had twice as many dots as you. He's splained it.

Cut up a couple windthrown trees yesterday with the project woodboss. I replaced the 3/8 20" low profile bar&chain with .325 18" RS. Guess what? My 250 is now officially on the shelf. Even in it's current condition the 028 is cutting better.

(I'm wondering if the seller just threw on a worn setup he had to increase the price.)

Here is my question. The saw starts incredibly easily. Is that a sign compression may be getting low?

Not necessarily. A small saw will pull pretty easily, and an easy start means that you got the settings right. In other words, it appears you "done good."

and sprocket, correct? If the .325 is running properly with the sprocket unchanged, I can only imagine how horrible it must have been with a mismatch sprocket and chain.

I received a Remington Super 754 from a swap meet with a 3/8 chain and solid-nose bar. The saw takes .404 pitch, but there were no signs of damage to the drive tangs or the sprocket, making me suspect that the B&C were just tossed on to make it a "complete saw" for the swap meet. Your saw come with 3/8 L.P chain and .325 sprocket? Or did you mention changing the sprocket in an earlier post and I typed all of this for nothing?

Sorry, I did not mention that I did change the sprocket also. My bad. The setup that was on there was worn and seemed not be very ideal so I got a little suspicious. I am still happy with the deal I got. I'll just have to find a bigger saw to go with that 3/8 bar.:dizzy:
