Another saw verses saw post!
I picked up a 041 super last month that was like new almost in the box new!
After using the saw I happened to like it more than my 044 that was also bought in like new shape. I found I could lean on the 041 more to me = more torque. Plus the saw just seamed to fit me better. I sold the 044 with heated handles to a friend. I also find for a early AV saw it is smooth in the cut not Jonsered smooth but not too bad for a older saw.
The only problem now is I have trouble justifying getting a new 2171.
Any one else have a 041 super? One big plus I found out about Stihl's is that the bar mount pattern is the same for all the medium to large saw's! 066 and down seam to be the same. Oh no am I becoming a Stihl guy.

I've has several.. neat old saw, but... my arms prefer the 044 hands down..
Really I could not tell that much difference between the two but then it could have been the chain. I know no Stihl can compare to a husky or Jred in smoothness, and that includes the 361 and 441 imo. But how do you find them as far as power goes? I really like that 041 plus it just sounds cooler! Not big Mac cool but not bad, that has to count for something:biggrinbounce2:

Less than an 044... The Super is a 3.7hp saw.. the 044 (later type) is 5.4hp...). Yes, plenty of torque low down, but no real high end. Still a neat old saw.

True my 044 had a bit more top end but for me I found little diff in the wood. My buddy has more use for a big saw than me that is why I sold him the 044 but I will stick to my guns on this one I found the 041super to be a good saw plus I like the old one's if you can call 1979 old hell I have trucks older than that!
Now that I have been Hunting for older Stihls how is a 056? I have a line on one but don't yet know the condition of it.

56 rocks... but.. depends on the model. Don't pay a lot until you know. The Mag2 (6.8hp) is one you want... but a "super" is pretty good...

Check out my thread on rebuilding an 056... many pitfalls with these logging saws as they were often deat to death.

044

I would take the 044 hands down over the 041. Feels better in hands and more power.   :)

I'm with Austin1 on the 041. GREAT saw. Unparalleled durability and a sound that can only be described as 'work me'.

I thought the regular 61cc 041 was 3.7hp? Isn't the Super ~72cc?

You right a super is 72cc And I think will give a 044 a run for it's money!

Not sure what it is yet all I was told it was in really good shape and running good. I really have no use for a saw that big but it would be nice to add to the collection. The cost is really cheap he wants to trade for a set of 6'' lift front springs I have for a Chevy.

Yes, the super is 72cc and you might be right that it has more horses than the 61cc model. I have big spreadsheet of these saws, but it lists the super and the non super as the same HP. Hmmm..

I'll put my stock 044 up against an 041 Super anyday, and win... oh yes... before Sawtroll chimes in, it's heavy.. 8.2kg.... Decent small milling saw though.

You are most likely right! I have to admit my 044 might have had a slight edge but not enough to make a big difference to me. But that dam 041 pulled at my heart strings. I also checked out the H.P# and they are the same for both super and reg 041? Just goes to show you cant trust paper numbers 11cc is a jump.
Also Thanks for the great 056 info! I wont trade unless it is in good shape.
As far as wight goes I don't mind for a bucking saw Hey I used to carry a Mac SP106 with a 32'' bar way over kill but fun to use.

You sound pretty sure of yourself!!!!

like the 044 myself but the 041 is a sweet saw and I know of another person in Texas who likes the 041s more than me!!!!

OK, I don't want to steal this thread but what about the 042? How does it compare to the 041 or 044? Reason I ask is because my friend has one with a 32 inch bar and it pulls that thing like no tomorrow, even buried completely in oak. Not a fast saw but you can't slow it down. I'm curious. Andy, any words of wisdom?

The 42 was the first of the bigger saws in "modern form" - lot's of similarities with todays models.. Not that many made though, so parts are hard to find.

It heavy (9 kg...!), 68cc, gobs of torgue and tops out at 4.5hp. I haven't used one in wood, but it should hang in with an 041s all day.

I don't think you stole the thread you made it better! I would like to find out more about older Stihls as I have a interest in them now! I personally go for a saw that feels right when I use it I also happen to like some of the older husky's and Jreds mainly the 254 and 262 but open to look at allot of saws. Again I would like to thank lake for his info he provided regarding older Stihls I would have gave him a rep but outa bullets!

I have 2 041's an 041 FarmBoss and an 041AV. Both of these saws are in mint shape. I love'em!!! Pulls hard and has plenty of torque. They're just nice old saws. As for the weight. They make me stronger. How light does a saw need to be anyway?
Yeah and their little sister is an 011avt. That is the "light" one.

I can't explain it but I liked that 041 much more than my 044 go figure everyone has a different taste. I really hate to say this but I like my newly acquired 056 more than my Big Mac Just because it is smother to work with.
