Oak smell test

Red stinks. Could be a variety like Scarlet oak.

Yep. We cut Scarlet and Black Oak here, both in the Red Oak family and both have a strong smell,
especial with cut dead & wet.

I deal with the smell cause my wood is stacked away from the house. Red and white oak is about as plentiful as poplar here in the foothills of NC

Here on this hilltop, my dead Red Oak looks like this in the split:



And the splitting is easy. The Oak in my original post is/was not at all like this.

White Oak don't split near as easy as Red Oak, and Bur Oak is one of the more difficult "white" oaks to split... dead 'n' dry Bur Oak can be a real bear.
