Hello Forum Members!

This is my first post. I have an old Jonsered Chainsaw my dad gave me. I was out cutting this past weekend and during a cut it just stopped. I tried to restart but could not restart it. I have taken the saw into a store to get a replacement chain and the salesman said it looked like an old 70 series. Not sure what model it is/was myself...

I tried to do a little troubleshooting myself. I did not see a spark from the spark plug, so I replaced the plug. Still no spark from the spark plug. I think the next item which connects to the spark plug is the coil. I measured about 8.7kohms across the coil with my multimeter, but I do not know what is should be. I do not know if it may be a faulty kill switch. The kill switch connects directly to the coil. I thought it was strange when I measured across the kill switch (whether open or closed) it was a short. I don't have a manual. Does anyone have a manual?

Anyway, I have contacted a somewhat local Jonsered dealer/repair shop and they have told me that it is possible that it could be the coil or he also mentioned points. I am not familiar with what points are but I think it must be similar to a distributor cap. The service man also told me that a lot of the part are now obsolete and would be a total bear to get if they even still exist in circulation.

If anyone has any advice or recommendations that would be great. Thanks.

Why is it so difficult to find a Jonsered dealer/repair shop? There are Stihls and Huscvanas everywhere, but I seldom see Jonsered when out and about. The saw has been great for the most part. Are there any other Jonsered users out there? Would you recommend buying a new Jonsered or would you go elsewhere?

Thanks in advance for your help.
Tom

First the 70 had points and the 70E had an electronic ignition.
Second, Jonsered just isn't as popular as the others=less dealers.
Third, the new Jonsereds have the same internals as Husqvarnas.
Would I buy a new Jonsered? Bought 2 this year. The 2171 would be close to 70/70E. That is like the Husqvarna 372XP.

Also, try unplugging the kill switch to see if you get spark.

.

Lots of parts for old Jonsereds online, you just have to look.

Most Husky dealers can get Jonsered parts because they come from the same distributor. They tell you parts are hard to find so they can sell you a new saw, thats how it works.

Jonsereds, Stihls, and Husqvarnas are all good saws, go try some and do some research here before you plop down any cash

The killswitch grounds to stop the saw. My old Jonsereds 451e had this problem recently i couldnt get a new killswitch so i fitted a push to make switch in its place, Now there is no way to try to start the saw with the switch in the wrong position as its on all the time:)
The original switch had no second terminal so i just added a wire to the chassis of the saw with the new switch.
Good luck

Old Jonsered Update

I found out today that my Old Jonsered is a 90 series. The problem seems to be the condenser and points. Does anyone have a maintenance and owners manual for the 90 series? Where can one get a flywheel puller?

If you don't want to buy the puller, your dealer will probably pull it off for you. Might even do it for free. I am not sure if the 910 and 90 share the same ignition components or not. I know the 910 is electronic, it might switch over. This is a question for the Troll or TaplinHill. If it is the same as the 801 I might have some ignition parts that I could send you.

Great old saw, I have been looking for one quite a while. Hold on to that baby.

Have you tried to unplug the kill switch and see if you get spark? Or follow the leads and look for a cracked wire? Ohms is resistance, if I remember physics class correct, your coil should be 0 ohms. Check your spark plug wire, you should be able to screw that out, and replacing is easy and cheap enough to do.

I will have a look tomorrow

I am pretty sure I have one or two of the condensers and possibly one set of points left NOS.

I don't think I have any NOS coils left but I do have good tested used.

You may want to consider using a point eliminator chip as they work extremely well on these saws and are maintenance free.

The chips run around 10 bucks which is far less than a condenser alone.

The 90 and the 801 is the same saw, unless for the P&C, as far as I know.

The 910 was made with both points and electronic ignition (910E).

I don't think this saw has an electronic ignition.

The serial number is 871993. There is no readable model number. The dealer I talked with said it was a 90 series.

It is a decompression valve. If you have one, it would be on the top of the saw. You push it down to start the saw, and then it pops back up when it fires. The 90 and 910 have the distinctive valve (button) on the top.

This is a 90

Old Jonsered Update

I don't have the saw with me at the moment it is in the shop. I did talk with the guy at the shop today and he said that the saw has the normal coil located near the top plus another coil just under the flywheel. He seems to think it is a really old 90. Can anyone tell what model this saw is by the serial number or will I have to post a pic? I didn't know what to do when the saw went dead. I wish I would have known about this site before I brought it into the shop.

PlantBio,

My saw looks alot like yours but the top and handle are grey. The air filter can be accessed throught the top rear circular access panel after loosening a screw in the center of the access panel. There is no kick-back brake.

You either have an 80 or a 621, but if the top and handle are gray, it is definitely not a 90.
