Hello, I picked up 2 old saws. One runs great with serial 54938496. The other is not in good shape but has number 41830 and i think is locked up. Wierd thing is I have a post hole digger for it, and can't seem to find any info or other ones. Have a spare bar and chain, both chains are maked "J". Also have both oil cans and one air cleaner brush. Missing the dogs for the bar, but have the handle end. Looking for any info anyone would have on my new toys. Thanks for reading and hope someone can help me out.

It's one thing to come across some old iron like that, but to have the post hole auger attachment....wow. There are a few big time Mac guys here who should be able to help you out.
Cheers for posting and welcome to AS

5-49

I have a rare water pump that fit this series, it is a McCullochbraned pump. Mine fits my 7-55.

Here's some info.

Model Profile: 5-49

I have a few of them. This one needs the oil tank.

I'm pretty sure the digger is a mcculloch, only a couple numbers on it. The add info is very cool. Thanks Mr. Bow Saw. Is there any info on the vins for these saws, posthole diggers? I couldn't even find the years that they were made. Guessing in the 50's, Did see that there was around 40,000 powerheads made. Love to find a set of dogs for the chain saw.

Mac 5-49's

Hello, Erand:

Good find of the pair of Old Mac 5-49's, with earth auger!!
Your two 5-49's are the 2nd and 4th highest known serial numbers among 5-49's known to still exist today. I've been keeping a registry of the earliest three models of McCulloch chainsaws (the 1225A, 5-49, and 3-25 models) for about four years now.

The five highest known serial numbers for 5-49's known to exist today are:
54938317
54938496
54939627
54941830
54942862

I now have about 68 McCulloch 5-49's in my registry, and photos and names of the current owners for most all of them. It's a part of a study of the very earliest Old Mac saws which me and some other collectors started back around in 2008...

Good luck with getting at least one good runner out of those two... and hang on to any and all extra parts!!!

Thanks Ken, my boss had them, they were his grandpa's and or uncles saws. They got them new in south eastern Ohio, and gave them to him about 7 years ago, just passed them to me because he knew I cut lots of firewood. The one cuts great, made a few cuts yesterday with it, starts on the first pull. I think its going to be on display inside of hunting camp. (hate to use it and break somthing) Going to try and free up the other motor, but don't have my hopes up for it.

Hi, my name is Tom.....new member......this is for "old mac guy".........I just picked up a Mac 5-49......S/N 54920287.......all intact from what I can tell......46 inch bar without the stinger handle.........been sitting out and needs lots of cleanup but it isn't seized up. I'm curious about the S/N......when was this one manufactured.....approximately...? Thanks for any info

I might be picking up an old 5-49 if you are still doing the registry I can get you the information. I also have a few questions about it. This is my first post still new to this website so please bear with me.

I'm still keeping the Early McCulloch Serial Numbers list. I still check in here from time-to-time to see what's going on with other AS members. Post your 5-49's serial number and I'll add it to the registry.

I have a Mcculloch 5-49 to add to your registry. S/N 54924909 Jordan out of West Lafayette IN. Not sure how to post pics on here.

Do you suspect the serial numbers started at 54900001 and I have the 24909th made?
