Could some of you tell me why these old 60's 70's saws are selling for hundreds of dollars? My point is that you could go out and buy a new one for a little more which is lighter and mechenical sound more user freindly and may be faster. I know Ebay is wacky on some prices. And there is a few collector (hence few) The local paper seems the same as ebay on prices. I gather that these chainsaw sawmills are keeping the big saws alive now too. Thanks for you thoughts.:sword: :yoyo: :deadhorse: :buttkick:

Somebody thinks they're worth it!

Yes very true, :jawdrop: like that saying about auctions (never be to proud of anything you by at an auction as you already paid more than everyone else thought it was worth!!)

I know that for myself, they're fun to work on and bring back to life and make run like new. I've got plenty of working timber saws. When I build an old saw it's to sit and look pretty, or turn around and sell again.

There's just a mystique about old saws. Like old cars. Same thing.

Jeff

Not only that, theres also the fact that they have been out there Working for 20-30 years!

There is no plastic to be broken down by sunlight, cold or chemicals, They are easy to work on even in the field and are much more tolarant of poor handeling/treatment.

Their just plain old better made.

Lets see if any of the current crop of saws is still running in 30 years:laugh:

I know with a lil tlc my old homeys will be. :biggrinbounce2:

Its strange but it seems some people pride themselves on spending MORE for something rather than less! People will spend $50.00 on a pair of jeans just for a logo where equal quality can be found for $20.00. All about show, not actual quality.

Of course with auctions I think many people just want to win, regardless of what they are buying and what they think its worth. Just look at all the "creeping" bidders out there. They'll bid $20, $25, $29, $34, $38, and on and on until they are the high bidder, then the bidding wars kick in when the other guys retaliates with the same game. If I see something I want to bid on, I have a fixed high price and that's what I bid. Maybe once in a while I'll reconsider and bid again, but this is rare. If I win, great, if not then obviously someone else wanted the item more than I.

thats how i do it to. to avoided biding wars . just put what you want to pay and let it ride.if you put the minimum and watch it every day chances are you will over bid on it . that is what they hope for.do not forget there be another one tomorrow.

I also just set my limit and don't change it. I get really frustrated when I think I have won and then in the last 10 seconds, somebody outbids. I like the opportunities that eBay has given me to sell stuff that would be worthless on an estate sale, but I like live auctions better. You can read who you are bidding against!

Use an auctionsniper. No point in showing your hand early, and you can't beat the rest of the guys that are using them... including me.

I just sold a 98 model husky 55 on ebay a couple weeks ago for 310 plus shipping charges..... As far as I know, you can buy them new from a few leftover stock places for 300ish.....

Does that count for old and "wacky ebay" prices? People are just stupid and get caught up in the "gotta have it, bid higher" mode....

For ebay, work out what you are willing to pay, and then don't show your hand. Be logged in with a few minutes to go, but only bid in the last 30 seconds or so. Bid what you are willing to pay, not some $1 more than the last bid rubbish. Someone else may be doing the same thing.

I just don't understand why people would bid up the price on an item a week out from the end of the auction. It defies logic.

I wouldn't buy a brand-name saw on ebay. Some of the old "crud" goers cheaply, but the brand-name stuff just goes for a stupid amount.

Old saw prices

Old saws are going higher in my opinion, because more and more people are collecting them. The more people that collect them; the higher they're going to go for! I myself am starting to collect the old HOmelites, which some of you have noticed. It does get very crazy on ebay though. A big HOmelite 1050 auto went for 365.00 on ebay a day or so ago. But if you think about it, a new saw of that size will be about 1000.00 dollars or more. Parts are the big issue.

heck lets not fuss attem. as far as saws are concerned ebays always been a sellers market . that goes for most any other auction ive been to also.
to buy, i look at the want adds and flea markets . to sell good ole ebay.
