Thats the diagnosis from here, and thats about the only option. A parts saw would be a better choice, IMHO. 54stude had a runner not that long ago, he may still have it and be willing to part with it.

The bar and chain from that one should fit any number of newer saws, also. Sad they don't stock them any more, but most would use the $100 or more towards a new(er) saw.

Yes, I still have the 264F. The next time you run through here it could be yours Jeff:)

Olympyk 970

Just Got a olympyk 970 yesterday. Does anyone have any spare parts, knowledge or any do's or dont's with this. Doesn't seem like its a gd subject or not alot to talk about these.

These Olympyks are the classic muscle car of all chainsaws. Nice saws...but they were not marketed very good. That means that there are not very many of them around. Good luck on finding parts. But if it is running and you take good care of it...you should have no problem getting another 2 - 5 years out of it. Just as good as any Stihl, Husky, or Jonsered...but made in Italy.

It does run. All I had to do was dump the old gas and put new in and it fired right up and ran gd. I could use a top cover because one of the bolts that hold the air filter cover is striped out and a clutch cover because the one I have has two chunks missing out of it. If anyone on here has either of these or other parts available please let me know.

My first experience with Oleo Mac -- in Nicaragua

Hey guys,
Don't know if anyone would be interested, but I put up a post about working with an Oleo Mac in Nicaragua in the 'chainsaw' section a couple of days ago.

My BIL has a 264 F that dies when hot----so typical diagnosis is bad coil? The saw is in great condition and tons of compression.

Chainsawr has a couple used coils for $75 plus shipping. Wondering what I should tell him to do? Is there a better option available? Just a bit concerned about replacing an old broken coil with an old "ready to break" coil.

Update---BIL was told by original dealer to switch to premium fuel and saw will run cooler. He got some premium ethanol free gas and says the saw ran great and never got hot and quit. Go figure?? I suggested pulling the plug and if it looked whiteish/gray to back out the H screw in very small increments.

Just read through this thread with interest after picking up an Olympyk 264. I'd heard of some of these brands but never realized they were made in Italy. I'm of Italian heritage so this interests me, the saw itself is also interesting. Seems to be more of an 80's Maserati than a Ferrari. The inboard clutch is nice, it's well built but some parts seem over engineered, some crude and some of the aestetics are just ugly. Overall though, given it's era, it does seem on par with other pro saws. I've been growing tired of tinkering with vintage saws and though I do love them I need something new and reliable as I cut ten cords of firewood a year. I haven't seen too much here on the new Efcos but given my budget they seem like a good option. I was previously considering a Makita/Dolmar but these are the same price range and made in Italy! Stupid reason for buying a saw I guess but I think most of you here have some sentimental reasons for owning the saws you do so what the hell. So I'd be looking at the 165(sounds like it may lack balls?) or i may be able to step it up to the 7200. Any insight on these newer saws, particularly vs. the Makitas? BTW I don't know if I need to hang on to the 264. It runs but won't idle well, seems to need a carb kit, I've only cleaned it up and haven't worked on it at all. Other than that, damage is: cracked air filter cover, missing bucking spikes, large crack in clutch cover making use of the chainbrake with the lever questionable though all the chainbrake parts are there except a spring that just keeps the lever from wiggling around, and where the handle attaches to the elbow on the bottom of the saw it is sloppy. Paint is in rough shape but it's pretty much complete and I believe it's electronic ignition(coil mounts on cylinder). I'd be interested in trades for certain Sachs 133 family parts if anyone is interested. Cool thread, thanks.

a real duh! question here. after owning my oly's for years now i finally thought it would be a good idea to write the serial number somewhere. problem is i can't find the serial number. anyone got any ideas where that might be for a 240, 251B, 251S, 252, 254, 264?

Have you looked next to the muffler, top edge of main case, next to the clutch cover?

not yet but i will. not anywhere visible. guess i'm gonna have to start taking stuff apart. i hate doing that if they working good.

Shouldn't have to. Same spot as many Stihls. Gets covered with soot. Often not painted, stamped in.
Efcos are engraved under the clutch cover, below the sprocket, if you can't read the stick on tag any longer.

Jeff,
you are correct, of course. thanks for the reminder. i've been seeing that there for 30+ years. must be getting senile.

I have been wrong more than once. I have taken pictures of the serial numbers on all the saws I had in the inventory of runners this past winter, should do that again soon. Insurance might cover something.

Hey Jeff, did ya ever hunt down a set of 47mm rings for me? Working on saws to take over to Specter's GTG next weekend.

I know they are ordered. Could be on the boat from Italy as we speak. I will follow up next week.

Thanks Jeff. I can wait, if it's not ready for WI, hopefully it will be before the MN gtg this fall. Gotta tear into my regular 264 and see what's making it not tick as well this week, I suspect carb issues. That one pulls 180PSI cold, just not much of a looker like the Deluxe is.

Trying now to figure out which one of my family members borrowed my 271, it disappeared out of the shed. Sure it wasn't stolen, there were plenty of other saws to take next to it worth much more dollar wise than that one.

All these saws and some others such as some John Deeres and Cub Cadets have been produced by EFCO in Italy. For some reason these saws are not widely known of. I suspect, based on my own experience, that its because the dealer network is weak with possibly some strong dealerships. I personally have not found any strong dealerships but suspect (maybe hope) that some exist.

I envision this thread to be a support vehicle for those of us who have the misfortune to love our saws made by Efco; in my case its my Olympyks. Parts for my saws are as rare as chickens teeth but still i slog on.

I specifically invite dealers of EFCO saws to be a part of this forum.

I am looking for parts for my 252 and my 254 project saws. The specific parts are listed:

252 - coil, points, sprocket cover, air cleaner, air cleaner cover, wrap around AV bars

254 - coil for electronic system, sprocket cover, air cleaner, air cleaner cover wrap around AV bars

I am seriously considering traching the AV handles for wrap around hard bars since that is what I am used to anyway with my other two saws.

Anyone interested in this thread?

Hey Jerry, check out this 254 I just picked up at a yard sale for $10. It is in terrible condition and locked up. It is missing the air cleaner, air cleaner cover, sprocket, switch, clutch cover, and probably more. Guy said that it had been sitting in his dad's barn for years. My guess is that it had been sitting without the filter or cover, then someone tried to fire it up and dust and paint chips got lodged into the piston and cylinder. I say this because there is a trail of paint chips going into the carb and I pulled off the muffler and there was dirt and those chips lodged into the piston. Piston looked like it was in good shape otherwise tho. Probably gonna be a parts saw. Shes in rough shape. If I do find a extra air cover I might try to unlock her and see what she does.
