I am aware that the right tool for the job makes all the difference; however if you could only have one hand saw for everything, what would it be and why?

Silky Sugoi with custom hook ground into the end. Why? because it cuts good on medium to large stuff, smaller can be lopped, and I use it as an arm extension for grabbing ropes and krabs. On that note, I don't own one of anything.

I use mine to grab ropes and biners all the time. That is one situation where the extra length really comes in handy.

My old handsaw was a Fiskars. It worked well but it was an older saw. The newer, more aggressive blades on the Silky's rock. My next handsaw will be a Zubat.

+1 on the zubat.

someone else climbs with loppers?

how do you guys keep from nicking the ropes you are snagging with your sugois? i tried duct tape; i know guys who just grind down that blade.

I usually have a biner on my eye splice to grab onto. Otherwise I just try to use the end of the saw, the vine cutter or whatever you call it, and be careful. A lot of the time I am just trying to pull a lowering line to me that is just out of reach. I am just careful to avoid damaging it.

silky

silky gomataro is the one i've had mine for 6 moths and it is great it cuts all the limbs and leaves a good finish + it comes it differnt sizes .eg 18 , 21, 27 , 30 cm. it has a relly good balance

I ground down the vine catcher deal on my sugoi and a friend of mines as well. Grind a shallow hook into the end and take the remaining edge off.

Here is the hook I use on mine.

I first read it as "one-hand saw" and was expecting another discussion on top-handles.

Ha ha , me too!

Silky Zubat...big enough for one stage below a chainsaw, and small enough for smooth cuts on little branches.
I call mine my 'third hand', reaching ropes, clearing branches, bashing off small dead wood...

Ah feel nekkid without it...

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info everyone. I have just started in the business and as you all know the tools are expensive. I try to learn from others so I don't make the mistakes that cost.
I am sorry about the open question I didn't think about the top handle saws when I posted the question.
I really like the idea of grinding a hook at the tip of the saw. What a cool idea!
Here's another beginner question for ya.< Do you have a lanyard attached to your hand saw? >
Thanks again.
