I do this as a hobby, that brings in a few $ on the side. I certainly don’t do it to pay my mortgage. That being said, I probably undercharge most of the time, and occasionally I do quick repairs for free if there’s no parts involved. My way of giving back I guess, as karma, and mankind, have been pretty fair to me. But, freebies are on my terms.
I won’t be taken advantage of...

I just say I don't do weed eaters etc and the occasional junk saw that comes in just tell them what it will cost to fix, which is usually a fried top end and the saw is not really worth it which is the truth,- most of the saws I work on are pro saws 65cc and up husky or stihl and nothing that has a computer controlled carb.

I do not work on Stihl crap. People look at you like you are nuts when you tell them cost of parts.:laughing:

I think the problem, might be, the dealer you use, Their parts, for the most part, are reasonably priced.
Want to post some part numbers, of parts you think are outrageous and we can check MSLP?
At least you’ll know. Even if it is your best buddy. Business is Busines.

... found a cure for the problem: I usually ask them to procure the parts themselves, and if they got them I can work the magic - and they can watch if they want.
I finally got fed up when this guy came who needed a bevel gear assy for a weedeater. I told him they would be USD 100+ and he gave me the "come on" look and told me it shouldn't be more than a few bucks or so.
So I sent him to the local dealer asking for the price of the part. Turned out to be around USD 150 :surprised3: - he didn't buy it...

Up here in the frozen north, OEM parts are EXTREMELY expensive. My local Stihl dealer wanted $185.00 for a new piston for a 026 and another $17.00 for each of the two rings. Of course that's Canadian dollars so 30% more right away. I like to keep our money in North America as well but when you tell the owner he can junk his saw or pay $20 for a Chinese piston complete with rings, piston pin and clips you know what the decision is. Don't give me noise about OEM quality, the AM piston was an exact replacement, fit and finish, measurements, ring end gap, everything. I believe down in the USA the cost would be about $70 at the dealer?

Nope. No noise. Sounds like you have everything in control.
Have a nice day.

A update was over to the neighbor with the weedwacker . I told him I will clean the carburetor threw it the ultra sonic cleaner and that's it I'm done . I tore the carburetor apart being careful of the diaphragms . Put back together he put back on I said just start it . Well it did too my surprise it did . Did a little tuning and done . He was very happy . I'm still done with this stuff .

Whenever I say that I can fix a saw and make it run again for half the price by using AM parts,
the owner says, "Do it." I usually say, "Are you sure?" The owner then usually says, "Yes, because I already paid the OEM too much for this saw when I bought it."

I always have the people purchase the parts, I'll give them part #'s and several different sites to look at.

I work on stuff for friends and work , I don't get paid extra at work for it and friends and usually get a meal out of it.
At work I don't get to pick what I want, its what gets broken,For friends its goes by the greatest need.
One thing I can say is that when someone professes to know what people's nature is or Gods thoughts, I can stop listening.
Examples for each :"furry clubs" and the platypus.

By far no expert for the most part can make a saw run . The rumor is I can fix stuff . What I get people want me to work on junk. Not sure of all the names ?All I say I won't touch it . I get the stink look . I got about 2 hours of working on the neighbor weed wacker with parts out of my stash . The only question I have . Why put up with this stuff ? My weed eater is about 20 years old got a mantis tiller about the age got chainsaws for the 1980 shish that will run with little effort . All I was thinking was buy a echo or some new battery model . What I heard some one pulling on a weed eater not starting . Nope not going to help .
When someone asks me to look at their 2 stroke, I ask, “does it have a primer bulb?” If the answer is yes, I tell them to chunk it.

I agree. I did a o28 as a favor . Got it going there was three ignition changes when I was done . Points .eliminated the the points .and a new coil . I had a great blue spark with the old stuff .. This would bark a little when bottle feed so I put a cheap carburetor on it . And nothing again . A new coil starter right up . A good blue spark means nothing when out time

I don’t work on Honda crap . I will get so hate from this . All I ever got was cold blooded no start junk . Well I said it . Change my mind .
I try to avoid Briggs as much as possible, but i love Honda GX engines, easiest engines to work on. We had a hard freeze a few years ago, got down into the singles and my power washer hose popped a pinhole and for some 12 hours it got misted with water below freezing. I came outside and figured the pump was a goner, ice was 3" thick on the whole unit, it was a blob of ice. I chipped at it until i got the rope handle and tugged on it..it broke loose. I got to the choke and flipped it. 3 pulls and it lit off. Melted a hole thru the ice for the exhaust...ran great. Had a customer set a gas can on a hot gx390 to open the spout and the muffler melted the can and dumped a gallon or so of gas on the engine. It ignited...burned. I put a new gas cap on, new carb, fuel line, tank fitting, recoil..changed the oil and pto seal...fired up and ran great. Easily one of the finest and most copied engine platforms ever.
