russ if u running an 16 inch on that 361 id love to see a clip of it.. if u can do that.. i cant..
my 962 is unmodified except for opening the exhaust a bit...
anyway with 16 inch set up it just plain is a cutting fool..
a tip on the 962.. be careful opening one up yourself.. its the only saw ive owned that slowed dn when i messed up the backpressure.. had to close it back up..
i know thats not the subject of this post,
but thot id thro it in ,,to head off problems for other 962 owners..

Stihltech, I've noticed the same thing on mine. I have been using it quite a bit lately and have yet to clean the filter. Just a little light dust with a chip or two is all.

Hi Tony,

It`s not like the 361 is blazing fast or anything, just that it`s a very nice package. Good power, reasonable weight, good balance, good anti-vibe, fuel efficient, and the filter stays pretty clean.

Russ

Wayne, if the new-model Huskies are any indication and Stihl can stand still awhile, there'll be no doubt who's making the better saws.

Glen

Glen,

Did you run the new Huskies? From what I hear they have more punch than the 460 and 385, much wider powerbands and the weights are accurate. I think that you assessment is premature, but then no less biased than ever.

Russ

Of course it's entirely meaningless since I didn't do it in the woods or even side-by-side with good (LOL) saws, but yes, I've run them. I believe you can read all about it and view the pics in a thread started here a couple or so months ago.

They've got the type of powerband which invites dogging in with a dull chain and they are absolute tanks. By "the weights are accurate" are you saying they actually weigh only 14.9 lbs dry, missing only the bar and chain? Or are you just making that up? Because I could have sworn I was carrying an 066 but it sure wasn't cutting like one.

Glen

Whatever you say Glen, but I think that your comments are atleast a little premature until we see both how the new Huskies stack up and what Stihl brings to the table.

Russ

I agree with you Russ, I like most saw brands and they all have there plus and minus,

Ed-
I agree with you about both brands having plusses and minuses. I don't have a lot of saws, but I do have an 036pro and a 365 husky. I did my first exhaust port and muffler tickle on the 036 and I was amazed. Then I did the 365 and I almost crapped my pants. It seems at least with those two, the husky woke up a lot more To basically the same modification.:D

This is a simple reminder, to any and all, that though I prefer Stihl as a general rule, I exaggerate my preference for them and my dislike for others merely as a source of cheap fun here where Stihl gets widely bashed on a regular and disproportionate basis.

Husky and Dolmar are both good companies that can't help having been bought-up by large soul-less conglomerates. My biggest gripe with them is the way they don't call a spade a spade. Granted, they use terms like "cutting attachments" which leaves wiggle room, but folks who're used to cutting attachments comprising bar-and-chain often advertise the saw weights as being without bar and chain when in fact they're derived without something else too. The aforementioned companies can't directly control what third parties claim, but they could make it simpler to be accurate. No doubt that steel coil springs can offer much in the way of vibration isolation, but greater mass is also a sizeable component to that end.

Glen

Glens , i hear you. I used a 066 for years cutting in the bush, I still have the good one of the bunch, I also used a 046 arctic with the muffler opened up , in the winter up here it would be my choice of saw when the snow gets real deep cause you cannot keep the saw out of the snow and they freeze up , I had to play around with the 46 arctic to get it to run the way I wanted but when done it was a very nice saw to use and no trouble. But I like the husky , Dolmar springs better than the stihl , much easier on the hands, the last 2- 372;s I have had worked great all winter in the snow , the ones before that were not as nice the vent kept freezing up so I moddied it and no more trouble

Glens, Its not my intention to give you heart palpatations by stating the obvious, but have you considered that Stihl has to do something to meet emmisions ASAP? Stihl saws are by far the dirtiest out there. They can bank some credits with their four mix blowers/ trimmers, but they are not that clean and will not be able to offset the current line of saws. The 361, which by all accounts is a good saw is only up to the level of the husky 372 and Dolmar 7900 emmisiosn wise. The way see it stihl will have to eliminate a few saws. Maybe the 039,310, 088 and 044. Then it will have to come out with a clean 50cc class saw, a clean 70-79cc class saw, and clean the rest of the line up with 361 style cylinders and or in some cases Cat mufflers.

Does that read like I think Stihl will be able to keep things the way they are? According to Russ, and I think I'll know first-hand some time soon, his MS361 is pretty fuel-efficient. That implies it's not spitting much out the exhaust. Stihl has their 270/280 in the midrange as you mentioned. I'll bet they're pretty clean compared to the older saws.

Time will certainly tell, though. I have every confidence in Stihl. You can't stay an industry leader decade after decade without having some savvy.

Glen

Asuming that the 270.80 and the 361 are indeed as clean as a husky xp style cylinder, wouldnt that make stihl in the dark ages emmisions wise? How long has the XP cylinder around?
