If I were to get a full-size pickup AND money were not a factor, I would get a Nissan Titan. It is a 1/2 ton with the towing capacity of a 3/4 ton. It has more hold down options in the bed than you know what to do with and is available in king cab and crew cab editions. The only problem is that it's in the $30k range, and that's too much for me. I would rather spend $5k or less on a mean, ugly old 4X4 that I can thrash through the woods with. Something like this:

Your dealer should be able to find you the Ranger you want without factory ordering-that is what you pay hundreds of dollars for in terms of delivery fees. They will try to sell you what is on the lot, but if it is not there they will do a search to find the exact vehicle you want and deliver it to your dealer.

'99 Mazda B4000 4X4 here, loaded but no leather, a Ranger clone built by Ford in the USA. I have been very happy with it, bought it with 40K miles on it last year and it now has 65k miles (107 K km). If you do not need the larger truck, go with something smaller. Those large trucks with V-8s gulp gas and are a PITA to drive around town at times. Wish you could get this truck with a diesel, you used to be able to in the late 80s early 90s.

Overseas you can get trucks, SUVs, even cars with diesels. What's up with the USA and diesel motors? Do people think the diesel is just for heavy equipment or what?

I don't know, I have a Dodge with the cummins it is the first diesel I have owned and wouldn't give it up for anything now, I would like to get a suv with a diesel in it, I see that Jeep is going to release the liberty with a mercedes diesel in it but they are only going to make a limited run to see how the public likes them, I myself would like to have seen the cherokee with the diesel, As far as overseas made the 4 runner with it would make a nice vehicle.

buy the most luxurious one you can find with low miles, you always lose less on these types in the long run.i paid 38k for a sedan that was a "hamburger with the lot''if i had paid 26k for the basic model i would have got 16k after 3 years the one i brought still fetched 32k.as long as your not buying new youll do ok

New Truck

I have a 1998 Dodge 1 Ton 24 Valve Turbo Diesel 5 Speed extended cab with most options. No matter what anybody says there is no substitute for endurance & power & I get 17-18 miles per gallon average. My brother in law just bought a 2004 leftover--new F-150 extended cab 4 WD & it has the 5.4 motor--what a gutless pig!--He has had it back to the dealer to have it checked for lack of power & they are telling him that it is running at peak performance, he gets only about 13-15 miles per gallon without towing & about 7-9 towing a 5000Lb trailer & he has to plan when to pass someone because of the lack of power. I can tow 5000 lbs & still get 14-16 miles per gallon & pass even uphills with ease. My truck has over 185,000 miles on it & I have just replaced the batteries & serviced it--that's all. Both trucks ride about the same... it is noisy but it is a TRUCK!!!

As long as they satisfactorily address 3 minor items I will likely buy it this weekend or next week.

Be sure to post pics when you get it. I have a friend that has a small Ranger pickup. It didn't seem real uncomfortable, but had absolutely no power with the automatic trans.

Only larger pickups are available with diesels here, and usually not the less expensive models either. Overseas, most if not all light duty trucks, including SUVs are diesel powered. Wait til gas hits $4 a gallon and people might get interested.

Hope you get the truck you want Brian.

rb yes Rangers with the 4 and auto are gutless but mine with the large six and five speed auto has all the power I want, though a V-8 would have been nice hauling my 4200 lb trailer especially on the hills. Mileage dropped from high 20s to about 12 as the motor and tranny was working hard to keep speed up on the freeways. But I do not haul it that much so I'll keep what I have.

Jumper,
You get high 20s with a V6? That's really good. I didn't know any pickup got that kind of mileage.

Smaller and lighter truck I guess-the engine is a 4 litre V-6, five speed automatic, which is a good deal smaller than most. The trade off is that the truck does not have capacity of a F150 for eg, but if you do not need the space, power or the hauling capacility, a compact truck fits the bill.

I wouldn't be caught dead driving a 2x4 anymore than I would use safety chain on my 385.
In fact, I keep admonishing DBabcock to ditch his limp wristed yupy Escalade and get a real truck such as a 2500 diesel Ram and lose the M5 and buy a helicopter so we can go loggin'.

I had a buddy that had one for a year or so a few years back. It would go over a 3 foot diameter log, through water up to the top of the windsheild (it had a snorkel kit for intake air and exhaust and the engine was waterproofed) had a hydraulic dump deck (2 ton I think) escape hatch on the roof of the cab, 6 or 8 speed gearbox forward and reverse with a splitterbox, on board compressor, air assist brakes and a 4 cylinder diesel. Didnt go for a $hit on the highway but off road was almost unstoppable. Approach angle is like 70% and descent is 90% I think. Loud as heck in the cab, a real pig to drive but boy its a hoot. His rig was from like '67 and used to be a Swiss forest fire rig. Ended up selling it to a mining company up north. Oh yeah, PTO on front and back as well.
