Picked up a R16 about a year ago for $30,did a muffler mod and raised compression, new piston, rings and this is absolutely one of my favorite saws to cut with, very smooth and a exhaust note that separates itself from all others.
Hi!
I'm new here on this forum and I have a R12 which I'm just started to modify the muffler on,
besides a milde attack on the exhaust port and maybe, just maybe a little work on the pistons top.
May I ask how you did your muffler mod? And are you satisfied with the mod?

I have had this on the main page for a couple of days and had no responses. I thought maybe in here it might get better interest?

I just put a ring on one of my Partner 5000's and decided to check the ring end gap on the old ring. It was more than 35 thousands but that is where my feeler gauges end ! So I was going to pun on a new Caber ring next and decided I would check that as well.
The new Caber looked so tight that I thought the ends were touching, I thought, well this is no good. But before I got too discouraged I thought I would try to measure it. The smallest gauge I have is 2 thousands, and I was sure that would not even fit. Well it did fit,.. and as near as I can tell the new cabers have 8 thousands ring end gap. I know I have read what the optimum ( REG ) should be but I don't remember . What do you think of 8 thousands?
The compression before I put in a new ring was 160# now with new ring in and a cold engine never started yet it reads 182#.

Just recently picked up an r16 but I, however, don't know much about how they are built, when I got it home I put fresh mix in it after having sat for a number of years by the way the gas smelled, and with a little persuasion it was running but it was smoking like crazy and then after about 20 seconds or so it cleared up some but not entirely, I did some tuning and running with it and it runs great at idle with no smoking but at WOT it still smokes way more than it should. Ik it's not the gas cause that's the same gas I use in all my saws so my question is, does the oil tank share a wall with the crankcase and could it be pulling bar oil into the crank case? The spark plug tells me it is getting extra oil from some where Thanks ADLM

I too would like to see the muff mod on the R16.

here is my old partner R16 I sold it to a builder up the road to help him out as he had all of his equipment stolen from his garage.

Plastic fuel tank and oil in the saw case. Unless the case gasket is leaking at the crankcase I would say you may have a carb issue.

Dump out the bar oil and see if it stops.

That was going to be my next plan of attack thanks ADLM

I been kicking this around for a week now. I think it would be great to have a Partner saw thread. I took a liking to the 500 series saws and all the other makes and models using this design. There is a lot of good info on these saws on this site, but sometimes hard to find when searching for a specific thread. Post any pictures of any Partner saws and their brothers, even if you have posted them already. Lets try to make this thread a wealth of information on these great saws.

I too would like to see the muff mod on the R16.

Here is how I made my R12 muffler mod.

My first attempt wasn't working well so I tried something else...

...I made this flute-like outlet with 16 mm cupper pipes, and some "gasket-in-a-tube."
+ 3 smaller pipes who fits perfect and hooks on to a steel wire I put in to join the 3 bigger ones.
(Some precaution if I have made the exhaust area to big.)

I also widened the muffler inlet pretty much but very little on the exhaust port in the cyl.
The exhaust port is now 16 x 35 mm.

Done! Worked fine until the muffler front burst out in flames.
The paint could not stand the heat.

This is how it looks today.
So, did I get a better, stronger chainsaw? Well, I think so, but I have nothing to compare with.
It certainly got louder and I will make a video in a few days so maybe someone could give me some feedback.

Why would there be TWO metering lever springs wound together in this R16?
[emoji15]
Production freak?[emoji848]

No wonder he has to be primed several times to get going.

Intake side of piston still has lathe marks.[emoji106]

Yes, not a chainsaw but helping a guy with a K950. Didn't run right so cleaned carb (no Kit) and didn't change . Figured I'll get a kit and while down do a P/V test. Didn't hold either and could not find leak. Found it to be the clutch bearing lube hole. Back together and no different. Does it need a new bearing and clutch drum or doesn't it matter? Thanks,David
