Picked up my new 460 MAG yesterday (UPDATED)

As you can see by my subject line, I am the proud new owner of a 460!!! :D
I have not had a chance to get it into any wood yet, but hope to make a few cuts tonight after work. I will keep you all posted.
What I have noticed so far....
Its gonna be A LOT more saw than my 360 PRO!
Just letting it idle, and bliping the throttle I can tell this thing has some nuts. I am going to call and place an order for the mod. muffler for it today! What a joke that stock muffler is! That tennsey weensey little outlet hole for all that exhaust. I think that the stock muffler is so restrictive that when it idles the exhaust pulsese getting all crammed up inside that metal box acually resonates a slight ringing sound off the metal muffler! I acutally notice this on my 360 as well. Its not that noticable, and the saw still idles and runs like a top!!! Well thats all for now, I will keep you posted, prob wont be able to get into any bigger stuff till the weekend and even at that, I dont want to run the saw too much before getting my muffler for it!!!

Hey Drew good luck with the new saw. Sounds like your going to make it a runner. I just straight piped and 045AV and man after removing that old square box muffler it's quite a saw. The Hoosier

Sharpen your chain it's a jungle out there!!

Well I cant really respond to that one seeing as how I have never ran an 044 myself. I spoke to a guy at my local dealer while we were waiting (he was pickig up a new 660) and he was telling me that from his experience that the 460 has more low end power than a 440. He also said his 460 was his "go to saw" unless he stump cuttin BIG stuff he pulls for his new 660.
Hope that helps-

Drew

Drew, That ringing tone is one of the reasons I prefer Huskies-Stihl exaust tones set my teeth on edge! They are good saws but they sound awful to me.

Drew, take off the factory 7 tooth sprocket and replace it with an 8 tooth, you will gain about 10% in cutting speed in hardwood with up to a 24'' bar.

UPDATE!!!!

Well got to make some cuts last night with the new toy!!!
I was pretty impressed with that saw. I had a digital tach strapped to the top to keep an eye on the readings.
Top end rpm, off load (20" bar and chain) I have dialed back to about 12,300 RPM.

This saw likes to run high rpms! I have the HI screw "out" as far as it will go!!! I leaned it out to over 13,500 for a fraction of a second and decided it would be best to run it a little richer. Stihl tells me 12,500-13,500 max rpms range, so at about 12,300 RPMS I should be safe. I was cutting some 18-20" poplar logs and she has some torque. didnt bog at all, it should be noted that I dont push my saws, let them do the work and keep the revs up.
So far I am quite impressed with the saw! Walkers is ups'in the a new ported muffler to me tomorrow, so we will see!

Reading some replies to another post of mine I think I will forgo the KN air filter and just keep my stock one nice and clean. But a larger inside dawg is in order ASAP!

It better be able to cut poplar, that wood is worthless.

I had my 670 and 28" bar just buried in some cottonwood the other day. My bud's were all amazed because it was mowing through such a big tree some quickly. Water was pouring right out of the clutch cover with the chips. I decided to mention that it would be a different story in oak. :D

Put in in some Locust and notice the difference

That saw will run safely at 13000- 13,500 all day long.......at 12,300 you are running it too rich and not getting the power and chain speed you should be.......

So 13000-13500 is safe enough?
As I stated previously, I am running at about 12,300 ish.
I could lean it out a touch next time I am tinkering with it to around 13,000 or so.
What doese everyone else think???

Thanks-
Drew

13,000 for that saw would be absolutly no problem. You should also think about getting the dual exhaust outlet muffler for it. It elimintaes that shroud right at the exhaust port and it adds another exhaust outlet on the muffler cover. Really wakes the saw up.

An 8 tooth sprocket will also add some performence to the saw. All little mods that we do to give the saw some extra omph.

Drew,
Congratulations on your new acquisition. You've got me a little curious. Didn't the shop set up the saw before handing it to you? If so, what was your initial reading from their setup?

Joey P & WRW-
Thanks for the info. I am just a baby and didnt want to over rev it the first couple of cuts. I have ordered a Walkers muffler for both my saws and will be shipped out today. They both have had the stock port enlarged and another port added on the other side. I need to call the guy and ask him why they dont open up that "ramp" on the inside of the 460 muffler. I think he told me something like that was the support for the inside of the muffler. I may be wrong.

As to the shop setting the saw, they did. When I was home that night I started it up and was just listing and gettin the feel for the saw. I noticed that if it idled for a min and I tweaked the throttle it would "bog" an then accelerate up. So I leaned out the LOW screw a bit and it acclerates at the touch of the trigger. I then decided I should tach out the top end. I believe I was around 13,000 then but pulled it back fearing that was too lean. See, I told you I am a nancy boy! Once I get the mufflers on I will re tweak the hi setting to make sure I am within spec.
Thanks

If it is all working then I guess there is nothing to worry about but usually is the saw bogs on accelleration you need to richen the low side.

Well hell, now you got me thinkin'.
I thought I turned the screw in a little, could it have possibly been that the lo setting was to rich? I dont know, but like you said if its working well leave it be.
She idles between 2700 and 2800 and acclerates really quicky!
Thanks

Not necessarily.......depends on if it is a rich bog or a lean bog......in drews case I think that he did the right thing.....if it idled for a while then bogged when he gave it to it it was probably too rich.

I am assuming that was the case, being a rich bog. It came from the shop with a really fast idle, no chain spin but it was prob. really close. So I backed it down a bit to the ballpark of 2800 per my manual.
I think it was a rich bog becasue it was idling fine not load up and it wasent racing "lean". If I let it idle for a bit and then just tapped the throttle it would bog and then pick up, once I let the lo screw in a bit (towards lean) it really became responsive. Now I just flick the throttle to goose it about 1/4 the way and that chain practically jumps off the bar!!!
All thats left is to get the hi side leaned out a bit, but I will prob wail till I get the new muffler, no sense in doing it twice!!!

thanks again Joey P

Stihl 460

:blob2: Drew......Congrats on your new 460.....they are one heck of a saw and I think you will be impressed.....There are very few things I buy that give me more pleasure than buying a brand new saw.....there is just a special feeling a person has when you get them home.....I still feel that way after all these years.....my first saw was a 125 mcaullah cart (I even forgot how to spell it) but that was a long time ago......I can remember being proud of it though.......but in any case have fun with your new saw......and did I ever mention getting a full port ????????? (LOL):D ......
I would suggest if you open up the exaust on your 460 then you should open up the air intake also....they compliment each other so well.......you can do this by putting a "max-flow" air filter and cover on it .....the 460 stihl air intake is around 89cfm (stock)......the "max flow" is 135 cfm......you can really hear the difference in the sound of the motor with it getting more air...the max flow set up is a $40.00 bill....includes two sponge filters and a filter cover......just a thought.....
