Definitely install the seal with the spring inward. To drive them without damage, I've been using the backside of socket large enough to fit snugly in the bearing counterbore. This way the socket will drive the seal straight and even. Never screwed one up yet.

Chris B.

Sorry Chris, but to be clear to me,will I be installing the flywheel side seal by driving against the open side of the seal which would put that open side towards the crank bearing?

The RA project.

Rings showed up today. 57mm x 1.5mm from 'The Greek'. Our new end gap is .030" which is a lot but beats the snot out of the old rings at .100".

Trouble is, I broke one when I yanked him out of the cylinder after measuring the end gap. The sudden vibration was all it needed to fracture at an inclusion in the metal. We treated the remaining one very gently. They have lots of cylinder wall tension.

Still detailing the misc. parts as I assemble him.

Suggestions for a thin head gasket? Dead soft copper sheet comes to mind. Maybe visit a commercial roofing outfit.

.030 is a lot of ring end gap , most of mine have .010 - .012. Your cylinder must be worn quite a bit.NOS rings are real scarce for the 57mm bores nowadays. Are your new rings the square ends type. Soft copper does make good gaskets, hobby shops carry many thicknesses.

Measured the gap at the top of the cylinder where the bore is un-worn. Maybe I should have gone a size larger (0.5mm) and just filed the ring ends.

Good to know about the hobby shop/copper sheet connection.

I have often filed down 58mm rings to fit the 600 series Pioneers, you say they have 57.5mm ones, even better. On my restored RA the NOS cylinder and NOS rings had a .090 gap, on my used and running ones there is a bit of wear and NOS rings had .010-.012 ring end gap down below the exhaust ports.

Just picked up a decent looking Pioneer or IEL model HA or HB.
Looking for a few parts. Clutch cover with bar adjuster. And the
complete locking mechanism for the rotating handle assembly.
Somehow they went gone bye bye.

TIA for any help.

'Hold my beer and watch this.'

Bolted the head on with just a smear of Versa Chem #2 sealer and it pumps 150 psi.. Not that we would run him that way.

The Hobby Lobby store opens at 9 Monday.

I do have the remains of a roll of .003" thick brass shim stock.

I need to get a set of IEL HC crank seals. Does anyone have a part number for some standard seals that will work?
I haven't pulled the clutch or flywheel yet but I at least know it sounds like there is almost no seal on the flywheel side under pressure.
The piston rings are sealing well. It's interesting to see that the piston is knurled.

Thanks

The 425077 seal is a 17x40x8 and the 425076 seal is a 17x32x7. I ordered seals equivalent to 425076 from Best Parts Online Home Page - their number 17 X 32 X 7 TC, NBR. Ordered seals equivalent to 425077 from Boats.net - New and Used Boats for Sale, Outboard Boat Motors, and Discount Outboard Boat Parts - 91201-V25-000 oil seal (Honda code 7943970).

Thank you for the info. Since you have an HC, a question for you. How come I keep stripping parts off the saw and it only seems to get heavier? :hmm3grin2orange:
I am really looking forward to getting this neat old saw running again. Coolest looking muffler I've ever seen.

The IEL model HC is very heavy for its size, they have knurled pistons,
