Yep the thin spot is a good place to use your sealer of choice to ensure no leaks.

Did you buy it yet?
While your here, what would your initial settings be for a Waldron SD53 carb on a pioneer P51 be?Did you buy it yet?
I tried starting my P51 Western today, new rings, bearings, piston, rings, seals and carb kit.
It fired first pull, with a squirt, then just flooded.
Both low and high are at 3/4 turn out.
Ideas?

Go one on the low, and 1 1/4 on the high. That should get you in the ballpark. Check to see if your Welch plugs didn't fall out. I have had that happen, and it will flood a saw out pretty good. If not that it could be the governor in the carb giving you a fit. Easy fix just block off the governor.
Well I tried to start it again, no luck yet but I will get it in the new year.

Have you pulled the carb off and taken a look at it? It could be as simple as the metering lever is to high.
Not yet trying everything else first, before taking the carb back off.
And I have 3 saws on the bench right now.
Husky 357 with new piston and rings, Partner P100 getting new fuel line, carb kit and check out. Plus the P51
Too many projects sometimes. But I Like it.
Not sure I will get at any today.

All 3 are good saws you got there.
I'm hoping to try them in wood soon.
Not going to run the western much at all. Got an old bug kill Pine in the bush I want to cut a few slabs off I'm hoping the P 100 will do it.
The 357 is going to my son for camping saw.
I like the Pioneers but I got a gift of about 30 old saws from a friend. All need work.

I believe you can mix different powders to get a color you want. You will likely want to do some testing though. The guy that did my p42 custom matched it.

Hello everyone, New to this site, first Post. I have been lurking for some time reading much. I am located in central NYS, North of Cooperstown.
I just got a very nice looking P41S. hoping to make it run again and use for cutting firewood. The problem with my saw is it has no spark. Do any of you know of a source for ignition parts. My saw has the 2 piece system.color of parts are black.

Unfortunately the ignition for that saw is very hard to find. You could try converting it to a Husqvarna 372 coil though. Welcome to the site.
Before you go searching for those parts have you disconnected the single wire that connects to the on/off toggle switch. They can fault out and cause a ignition failure. Might also want to check for frayed wires .

Yes, I have disconnected the lead going to the kill switch and tested, still no spark.

I suspected it may not have had spark. After I replaced the fuel lines and rebuilt the carb. I noticed the flywheel was lose as I was testing out the wires when I first realized no spark. Looks like someone else had tested it. This saw had sat long enough that the black fuel line in the tank had totally desintegrated.
I also set the air gap to .006, and tried that, still dead.
Is there any links or info on fitting a husky 372 coil unit to these saws, I am willing to give that a go.

Pioneer specs Air gap Models FM & P41 is .010" - .012", Models P51, & P61, air gap .025" - .030"
Try re setting your air gap and torque your flywheel nut to 25-30 ft lbs

Thank you for the specs, already cleaned taper, checked key, and tightened the flywheel. Will set air gap at .010 and give it a whirl. It has always been my findings that minimum air gap is best for timing and spark.
Getting good at removing recoil housing and reinstalling.
All leads are smooth and free of any breaks in insulation.

After you check & adjust air gap with negative results , you then need to isolate fault. lf you still have no spark then replace the output coil first, thats the small one under the cover shield. lf still no spark you have isolated to the ignition module.
l do have new ones here but not sure about selling at the moment.
