I got the farmsaw buttoned up and dialed in today. Dressed with a 24 inch bar out of the cut it hit 11k. Thats a lot more than I expected and the compression is still high based on feel when Im starting it. The SM states 7,500 max from the factory. I'll dial it in proper when I have a moment to cut and check compression once the rings seat. I haven't tried the new line spool yet but will give an update when I do.

Ok, I got this 3200 going. New crank seals, cylinder gasket, fuel lines, & carb kit. Much mahalo's to Tim, @fossil, for all his help.
Not that I am any sort of authority but I was quite impressed with this saw, from the engineering to how it runs. This thing rips! I have a few saws but my two Pioneers are my coolest.
20" bar, btw.

Tim's a good guy! He has gone out of his way to help me on more than one occasion.

That's interesting. I learned something as well. My P40 has the goofy Farmsaw type recoil as well. I figured they were all like that.
I learned something as well. My IPL`s did not show the Bendix type starter so after Jason posting one showing it then I dug out my real old or early Pioneer books and literature and found an IPL showing the early P40 with the Bendix starter but it also states that that starter was never used on the P41. I do remember asking the question on here if a P40 recoil could be used on a Farmsaw and the answers were no the flywheel would need to be changed out and that the coil/module used with that flywheel would not mount on the Farmsaw cylinder, mounts were different.
Well here we are now and it looks like the P40 recoil cover and internals will work if it came from a P40 that originally came with the Bendix starter.

I just looked at the IPL I have and it shows both starters.
I won my P40 in an auction back in 2014 for $6
Long before I paid much attention to stuff like that or knew how the sharpen a chain.
I suspect i am not alone in sustaining a few wrist burns getting used to the horizontal cylinder mufflers.

Stout saw. That starter does feel about as smooth as sand paper.
I find little paint chips around the saw on the shelf

A question. Does your saw have the Bendix starter? If it does what module does it use? Just for education sakes.

Hi Jerry,

SN is 991900
I'm assuming Bendix starter. Points ignition.

Thanks ,Tim. Now I am making headway on my earliest question of swapping recoil`s from a P40 to a Farmsaw. It does look like the engager on the recoil would fit into the flywheel of the Farmsaw ok. If so then there would be no need to swap the P40 flywheel over to the Farmsaw and thus no need to also swap over the coil. One day I will find an early P40 and actually try the retrofit to see if it really will work.

I'll try it on my orange critter.

I doesn't go. The only screw hole that lines up is the one directly above the flywheel.
The upper front is close, the lower front not close and the lower rear hole doesn't appear.
I tried holding the 40 starter in place tight to the case contours but the starter wouldn't engage.

I suppose it might be made to work with some serious surgery to the P40 starter. Not sure though.

That is what I always have suspected, it is not a direct swap. Thanks for doing the leg work on this one.

Yours would appear to have a standard pink umbrella valve situated in there somehow. (I included one in the pic purely for illustration purposes.) Mine is a plastic mechanical valve with an 'O' ring and a spring to seal it and can only fit in the cap one way..., which has it venting outward allowing air (and fuel) to also vent/leak out unless outside air pressure is significantly higher than tank pressure. It allows no air back in to account for fuel volume loss and the associated vacuum created like a normal tank vent does. Makes no sense whatsoever. And we're actually talking about tank pressure equalization here anyway, not actual venting, per se.

Good memory! And thanks. I have those pics in my archives, too. And don't think I haven't considered that approach already. I'm not quite there yet since I still have all of the original components. Just trying to get my head around why the vent is going the wrong way in this cap. Either there's a damned good reason that I'm completely missing or something else isn't right. The tank holds zero pressure. Not even a little. Maybe Cory can provide some enlightenment. Would also be interested in how well such a superb piece of redneckery has held up over time. Could be a solution for my oil cap issue as well.
as well

I'm looking for P-50 Crank bearings and seals and wrist pin bearing. Part numbers and or where to get them will be really appreciated!

  • Question for my Pioneer friends. What is this saw worth? Its missing the starter and have no idea if it has spark. I might have a chance to purchase it and want to know what's a fair price for me and the seller? Thanks in advance

Well, I've got a running P52 with a fairly fresh 655BP top end listed for 700 + the ride with no hits so I'd say 1-200 if it has decent compression. If you wind up needing parts for it, lemme know and I may be able to hook you up.
