Hello. I have a poplar on my property with a significant hole high on the tree. I'm deciding on removing limbs (hanging over the house) above the hole or removing the tree all together (large discrepancy in price) From the ground, the tree looks completely healthy in full bloom.

So you guys believe trimming the limbs over my house would just be delaying the inevitable? Removing the entire tree is going to be costly based on location.

Yes, and leaving a tree with a known defect puts you in a very vulnerable situation with your insurance company if there is a failure.

@OVR I'm gonna suggest calling a reputable certified arborist out and pay them to look at it. They might be able to get rid of the entire damaged limb back to good cut point and keep the rest of the tree. As long as it removes all of the decayed branch and doesn't make the rest of the tree unsafe. The pictures don't really show much other than a closeup of the defect, and a far away shot that's hard to identify anything. I do this every day, and you need somebody who knows what they're doing if you're thinking about keeping tree. Internet forum is not what you need on this one.
