Before six months ago or so, I 've never even heard of Dolmar...Now I own two...With the growing popularity and performance of the Dolmar/Makita saws, it will soon be one of the "big boys" IMO.

Maybe, maybe not. They were making great saws in the 80's, and were quite popular in my area. Then, they just about went defunct. They've had great potential for the last 50 years, but have never seemed to be able to cash in on it.

Is it the lack of marketing here in the USA...A few co-workers that have saws have never heard of Dolmar until I got one...Seems to be an "underground" tree cutting society that is familiar with this brand. They do know of familiar names, ie. Stihl, Husky, Homelite and soforth. Maybe Dolmar needs a new marketing firm to get exposure and get these saws moving out the door. The equipment can keep up with the big names, so thats not a problem. I mean, where else can I get a big saw piston and jug(7900) that's a direct bolt-on to a mid-range saw and call it good!:hmm3grin2orange:

In the late 80's around here (Arkansas), seemed just about every town had a Sachs Dolmar dealer. The pawn shops were flooded with them til the late 90's. Marketing may be a problem, but it's not been from lack of opportunity.

delete this whole damn thread..please

It's a tough call... include J-Red or not ...

Here in Southern Ohio several of the Husky dealers were forced to stock & sell a full line of Husky products .... a few dropped Husky and now sell J-Red...
Some closed..... etc....

I know the saws share many of the same parts & tech, but it seems J-Red has a different approach to it's business & sales ...... an underdog ? ...yes .... imo......

Slipknot, this is an interesting thread, you would probably received more opinions against, by including J-Red ..... good thread ...

Referring back to the topic of marketing, I keep seeing Stihl commercials on TV...Now with that said, there are NO OTHER saw manufactures, that I know of, that does in fact advertise their product...Now say an older man is watching tv, sees this ad for Stihl, he thinks "'ya know, I do need to get that damn tree down that's hanging over the back porch that the wife has been riding my ASS all winter about" and heads for the nearest Stihl dealer...BAM! A 700.00$ deal is made...and you know what? the guy doesn't know onw saw from another...but guess who gets one more consumer...

slipnot. First, your slogan is wrongly attributed. It is in fact a Benjamin Franklin. You have a paraphrase; The original is in a letter and runs something like 'Those who are willing to surrender their precious liberty for some temporary security deserve neither liberty or security.'

Now I have run Poulans for decades and everyone, treemen included choose niches of the economy for their survival strategy. Poulan is an entry level saw that is cheap to get into. If I have a dicey situation and might have to stop drop and roll, throw the saw, I dont want it to be my 372 Husky. If I have to cut a dirty stump that might have some concrete... You get the picture?

Like a night shift single unskilled mom clutching her cheap saturdaynite special in her purse in a dark parking lot, She tries to take care of business with what she can afford.

Echo is an underdog?

I have several Echo saws and trimmers. They are absolutely top notch equipment. They should not be listed as "second tier". Of course, I don't live in the woods. I do lots of cutting and trimming and the Echo weed-whacker is unmatched in my opinion...and the 3450 just outperforms for a super lightweight trim saw. My biggest Echo saw is a CS 670. I don't need to use it often but it starts easy, oils great. runs strong and handles great bucking up firewood. I also have several Stihl saws and they seem to be engineered the best. But the Echos should be up there with the top dogs.:biggrinbounce2:

Its not about being second tier. We all know just about everyone favors stihl,(except happy sappy) then just about who ever else is left goes with husky, there is a small percentage of people who use "other" saws. I agree echo is top notch, so is dolmar, efco, etc.....less poulan,mc culloch, new homelites. This thread means absolutely nothing...I was just curious what is the next prefered brand compared to ( The big 2 ) (stihl,husky/jonsered)

I'm not sure Echo is my choice, but is terms of sales, it has to be no. 3 behind Husky... Echo dealers are everywhere, at least around here. Anyone have any real data?

Google only hits 4 different items with your signature line, and two of them are yours. What is your source for that quote?
