I've had this Poulan 330 for some time now trying to find some parts to make it run again. After searching high and low without any luck one of our fine members sent me a complete Craftsman version of the 330. Thanks Volks-man!!!

Here's the Craftsman after I got it down and checked the port timing and squish.

The stock numbers are:
Intake duration: 144°
Exhaust duration: 155°
Blowdown: 25°
Squish = .028

These aren't bad numbers for a work saw, should make plenty of torque and rev up good as well. The thing is, I'm building this saw more to pull out at a GTG and surprise people with. :D

I ordered a new set of crank bearings today so it will be a few days before it gets back together. In the mean time I plan to clean, clean,clean, plus do some matching of the cases and jug...

The first thing I noticed was the huge difference in the jugs. On the left is the Poulan jug. It is a plated jug with way more transfer tunnel area. The base also has a different bolt pattern than the Craftsman. The right hand jug is from the Craftsman, this saw has a plated piston and an un-plated jug.

Here is a shot of the case and jug. Notice how mismatched these two parts are. I'll unshroud the case here when I begin porting.

Another difference between the Poulan and the Craftsman was that the Poulan was sporting a rim drive.

I'll be adding to this thread for the next few days, hopefully we'll end up with a running saw in the end.
 
Good thread Randy. I bet the Craftsman is a new saw than the 330. That's why all the differences. Just a guess, I don't know squat about them. I'll be watching and learning. :cheers:

I'd bet you are exactly right Ed. I hadn't thought about that.

All I know about them is that they are 54cc.
 
Great thread Randy. Some of the first saws I got into were the PP 330's. two are still at 54cc's and the other two are now sporting 60 cc's. This was one of the most under rated saws ever produced. The 22 inch bars that most of the came with along with the 72V chain was the first thing to go. The two 60cc saws now have 20 inch 3/8 and the other two were converted to 18 with .325. These saws are 14,500 rpm screamers and I which they would produce them again.

I've been gone all day and haven't done a thing in the shop. I should be able to post some progress tomorrow.
 
What model P&C takes it to 60cc?

Poulan part numbers;

Cylinder, 530069892
Piston kit, 530069549

Off of a 380 will bolt right on.

i have a poulan 2800 (which is very similar to the 3300 and 330) that is running a poulan 3750 jug and the universal poulan 60cc piston. :)
there are minor differences in the 3750 and the 330 familys but nothing insurmountable.

lots of 60cc poulan jugs may be made to work like the 3450 (type 3 only, if memory serves), 380, 380c, 365 (if memory serves), and the aforementioned 3750.
 
I finally had a chance to do a little to the 330. One of our fine members sent me a message sharing with me his experiences in porting the 330. He told me to be careful or I would end up ventilating the crankcase while matching the case to the jug. Because of this I took a closer look and saw the issue.

The circled area is recessed, and quite thin.



I roughed it up and filled the spot with epoxy before I started grinding.

I still have both of the 330 cylinders that were removed when those two were upgraded to 60cc. Those cylinders and piston were bought from Millennium Mowers here in Lincoln. He told me they were off the PP380 and they bolted right on. Both saws are in Missouri but now my curiosity is peaked after looking at your photos.

Randy if you need a couple of cylinders let me know.
 
that looks remarkably like a 3750 cylinder.
i have the part numbers on another computer... anyone know if they are the same cylinder?

I believe they are Volks-Man. When I fixed up my Poulan Pro Super 380, I got some used parts on E bay from a 3750 Badboy. They use the same body parts, air cleaner & cover, muffler, handles etc. And i'm pretty sure the same P&C.
The cyl. I bought new from Poulan.
The IPL's I have list the same cyl. part# for each. 530069892
